Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #6

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #6...

Ryan Parrott is on to something incredible with Mighty Morphin. I know I say it a lot (every review) but each issue just gets better and better. Still reeling from the revelation that Matt Cook is the new Green Ranger, the Rangers are still having to contend with Lord Zedd and the impenetrable dome that surrounds Angel Grove.

So, in typical Mighty Morphin fashion, #6 kicks off with another trip into Zordon's past. We see a great bit of character building as Zordon and Zartus talk about the elephant in the room - Zordon's promotion to Chief Guardian. Naturally, Zartus is a bit peeved that Zophram chose Zordon over himself, but promises that he is loyal to the new Chief Guardian - and even admits that Zordon might be the better fighter.

Back in the present and it's been 23-days since Lord Zedd surrounded Angel Grove with the Dome. Matt is still trapped inside, and the Rangers are still trapped outside. Now, this is where Ryan Parrott drops one almighty...pardon the pun...bombshell. During the time hop, the Rangers are now working with the US Army who is attempting to breach the dome. Of course, their attempts are unsuccessful which results in the Joint Chiefs discussing the potential of nuking Angel Grove.

I never thought I would use the term "nuke" and Power Rangers in the same article. However, Parrott uses the situation to further build the Ranger squad. There are some nice talking heads as we learn about Rocky's family and his collection of bottle caps. It's great to see the team talk about their lives away from being Rangers, especially as they ponder both the threat of what Lord Zedd is doing in the Dome and the military impending Nuclear bombardment. Aisha also gets her moment as she laments on using the Zords as a deterrent.
It's an incredibly interesting situation that the Rangers are in. And the fact that they're even debating about going to war with 'Uncle Sam' is truly fascinating. I can't see it happening, but I can't help but wonder "what-if".

Candice also gets a moment in the spotlight as she reveals to Billy and Zordon why she's on Earth. We still don't know the exact reason but it's to do with the Eltar potentially revealing themselves to us Humans. Candice explains that civilisation has to be more advanced, but Humanity has been through quite a lot. If anything Candice's role is almost tying into Zordon's past as both an Eltarian Supervisor and his relationship with Zartus - who happens to be the current Chief Guardian.

Without spoiling the ending, it's a real "holy sh#%!" moment, and I'm not entirely sure how (or even where) the story is going to go. That's the real beauty behind Mighty Morphin, Ryan Parrott gives us these cliffhangers that make us want more. Add in Marco Renna's gorgeous artwork, Walter Baiamonte, Katia Ranalli and Sara Antonellini's colours, and not forgetting... Ed Dukeshire lettering. All of it comes together to make Mighty Morphin the tour dé force that it currently is.

Rating 10/10
