Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #22

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #22... With Kimberly and Tommy still captive within the pocket dimension, Mat Groom signs off his Mighty Morphin  tenure with optimism, endings, and a look at how great the colour pink is! Mighty Morphin picks up straight from where the last issue left us with Kimberly and Tommy testing the new metallic armour within the picket dimensions. Due to weird 'Morphin Grid' shenanigans, the pair find themselves cut off from reality, and at the mercy of a few foes of future Rangers - mainly those from Jungle Fury, Dino Charge, and Lost Galaxy. When then follows is a pretty decent action scene as the duo comes under assault from these new foes. With Tommy receiving the brunt of the punishment, this forces Kimberly to retreat further into the Pocket Dimension with an unconscious Tommy.  With Kim already having a conscious of faith, things don't look too good. Well, that's until the Pink Emissary shows up. While the celestial bei...

Comic Book Review - Power Rangers #21

Rob reviews Power Rangers #21... The Rangers are well and truly on the path to that landmark #100th issue. With Ryan Parrott teasing that issue #100 won't leave a dry eye in the house. What does he have in store?  Well, right now we're still thick into the build-up and as such it's another "normal" day in the office for the Omega Rangers. After Andros interrogated the captured Xurix in the last issue, XI has discovered the location of the Astro Megaship - which just so happens to be deep within Xurix-held territory. With the Xurix interested in the contents of a locked room, and with Darkonda on his way to collect said content - time is running out.  As such Andros intends to infiltrate the Astro Megaship on his own as some kind of penance for his past failings. Yet, in true Ranager fashion, Jason convinces the Red Astro Ranger to allow himself, Yale, Trini, and Zack to tag along. What follows is a VERY interesting set of events that not only introduc...

Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #21

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #21... With both Ranger teams still on Earth after their recent ordeals, Mighty Morphin #21 continues to deal with both teams reflection on what it means to be a Power Ranger. With Jason still greiving, and Kimberly having a crisis of faith, are we about to see a shake up within the Rangers and their Omega counterparts?  It will come as no suprise that this issue also draws its main focus on one particular member of the team. So far Mat Groom has quite rightly fixed his attention on Rocky, who up until now has been a bit of a blank slate. This time around, Groom continues to build upon Kimberly's reservations that as Power Rangers they are ultimately expendable. These thoughts haven't been helped by the team feeling the effect of Jason's mothers death, and that a normal shopping trip with Trini reopens Kim's world to the events of 'Shattered Grid'.  While normally Kimberly is portrayed as one of the more confi...

Comic Book Review - Power Rangers #20

Image
Rob reviews Power Rangers #20... Both the Power Rangers and Omega Rangers find themselves reunited once again back on Earth. Brought together by the untimely death of Jason's mom, it's a sombre time for reflection for many members of both teams. However, evil is stirring as dark machinations begin to make their play. With Safehaven under the imminent threat of invasion, what lies inside of the Omega Vault?  As you can imagine, Power Rangers #20 is a very Jason-centric issue. Of course, it has to be! Back on Earth to attend the funeral of his late mother, we see a side to the Omega Ranger that's rarely explored. If anything it's in this issue we see the real Jason. While he's had the mantle of responsibility resting firmly on his shoulders for several years now, it's here where we see the Omega Ranger's vulnerability.  Power Rangers #20 is certainly a touching issue as Ryan Parrott explores Jason's grief and his relationship with his father...

Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #20

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #20... It's been a tough few issues for Rocky and Matt as they attempt to counter the plans of King Aradon and his Machine Kingdom. The grueling battle has seen the two Rangers essentially utilise stalling tactics to run down the clock whilst the rest of the team tries to complete their mission in the Lion Galaxy. But what happens when the clock runs out?  Picking up directly where Mighty Morphin #19 left off and Alpha-5 is still charming the socks off King Vieron. It's quite a comedic moment as Alpha utilises his connected databases to make Vieron putty in his hands. It also gives Kimberly and Adam time to infiltrate the Palace to deactivate the teleport lock that's keeping the new Command Center in place.  We then switch back to Earth as Rocky and Matt are in the heat of their battle with the villainous King Aradon. Where previous issues have seen Mat Groom explore Aradon's character, it's here where it all comes crashing d...

Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #19

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #19... Rocky, Matt, Zordon, the Promethea scientists, and Rocky's family have managed to avoid King Aradon's bombardment via the sanctuary provided by the Zords shield dome. Meanwhile, the rest of the team finds themselves undercover on the planet of the Lion Empire. So, just another ordinary day. Right?  This one is a slightly shorter review than my normal Power Rangers coverage. The reason is that there's A LOT to digest in this issue, and it's one that I feel is best read first hand.  Before I get into the bulk of this review,  Mat Groom 's interpretation of King Aradon is brilliant. Aside from a few mentions during Power Rangers Zeo, King Aradon is an entirely new character - although he's closely connected to Zeo 's King Mordo. Groom continues to build Aradon's character throughout this issue as we start to see his motivations in attacking earth. Since before the onset of the Eltarian War there have been sly ...

Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #18

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #18... Still dealing with the aftermath of the Eltarian War, the forces on Earth are starting to rebuild. Whilst the rest of the Rangers have set off for deep space, Rocky had been left on Earth to defend against any threats that may arise. With Matt alongside, Rocky not only has to contend with protecting a defenceless Zordon but he's also got to grapple with his meaning of what it means to be a Power Ranger... Much like the previous issue, Mighty Morphin #18 takes a fragmented approach to its story. While most of the Earth-based team are on Aegus V searching for a replacement Command Center, Rocky is left on Earth to babysit his siblings. It's these two narratives that Groom jumps to throughout.  The issue opens with Zordon returning home to what's left of his "castle". It's quite a poignant scene as the once-powerful Eltarian has been reduced to a literal head in a jar. Not only this but he's entruste...

Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #17

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #17... The Eltarian War is over and the Power Rangers are left to pick up the pieces. The Omega Rangers have returned to space, the Eltarian fleet has fled back to Eltar, and Promethea and the Command Center lie in ruins. With new threats on the horizon, it's over to the new creative team of Mat Groom and Moisés Hidalgo . Power Rangers #17 signals a change in two new ways. Not only do we see life after the shocking Eltarian War, but we've also said a fond farewell to long time Power Rangers scribe, Ryan Parrott . Whilst I had my reservations as to what a post-Parrott Power Rangers story would look like, Mat Groom has stepped up to the plate in a big way!  Picking up right where the Eltarian War left off, Groom introduces us to the Ranger team as they reflect on the loss of their one constant - the Command Center. Sadly this loss isn't for long as Alpha brings word that the Command Center is a common building within Eltar society. A...

Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #15

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #15... The Eltarian War continues as the Rangers battle to save Earth from Zartus and his forces. However, not everyone is convinced that the Supreme Guardian is doing "the right thing". Meanwhile, there's a colossal confrontation on the Moon, as Zordon and Lord Zedd finally come to blows... As you can imagine from Inhyuk Lee 's cover, Power Rangers #15 doesn't pull any punches. Straight from the get-go, we're thrown into the action, and it doesn't let up until the final page. Yet even among the action, Ryan Parrott still delivers plenty of character-driven moments that's been the real core to both the Eltarian War and the previous Unlimited Power Era.  The narrative is somewhat calm this time around as we focus mainly on Zordon and Zedd, as well as the Rangers battle against Zartus and the Empyreal. First, off we're back into Zordon's past as the Supreme Guardian attempts to defend the planet Bivix agai...
