Comic Book Review - Power Rangers #21
Rob reviews Power Rangers #21...
The Rangers are well and truly on the path to that landmark #100th issue. With Ryan Parrott teasing that issue #100 won't leave a dry eye in the house. What does he have in store?
Well, right now we're still thick into the build-up and as such it's another "normal" day in the office for the Omega Rangers. After Andros interrogated the captured Xurix in the last issue, XI has discovered the location of the Astro Megaship - which just so happens to be deep within Xurix-held territory. With the Xurix interested in the contents of a locked room, and with Darkonda on his way to collect said content - time is running out.
As such Andros intends to infiltrate the Astro Megaship on his own as some kind of penance for his past failings. Yet, in true Ranager fashion, Jason convinces the Red Astro Ranger to allow himself, Yale, Trini, and Zack to tag along. What follows is a VERY interesting set of events that not only introduces a new Ranger but could also set up ramifications that stretch far into the Omega Rangers post-Ryan Parrott's future.
While the Omega Rangers and Andros galavant in space, things are also heating up back on Safehaven. With Journey now a teenager, Zack and Trini are finding out just how stroppy teenagers can be. A lifeline comes their way as Arkon and Kevor plan to host a celebration of life. Journey is more than happy to attend as the youngster seems to have a soft spot got Kevor. But with the Xurix having infiltrated Safehaven and actively searching for the Omega Vault, could more losses be coming?
It's another great outing for the Omega Rangers as Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, and the rest of the creative team do what they do best. As always Parrott shows his depth of understanding of the Power Ranger mythos as he drops hints about the existence of D.E.C.A, the Astro Morpher Vault, and possibly the "Megatank" too. I'll be interested to see if we're about to get a Power Rangers In Space spin-off as everything seems to be pointing to the Astro Ranger's imminent arrival - and that's before we see the already revealed "Death Ranger", and the conclusion to this issue.
Aside from this and there's plenty of character building for Andros. It's quite interesting to see where things are going for the Red Astro Ranger. On one hand, his unwillingness to tap into the Morphin grid shows some kind of regret due to his past actions. Yet on the other hand he's schemed his way into the Omega Vault and has some secret agenda on the Astro Megaship. He's an interesting character, who's cold and calculated demeanor is very different from his on-screen counterpart?
All in all, Power Rangers #21 continues the build-up to #100 very well. There's a strong balance of storytelling and action, with a dashing of character building on top. With plenty of small signs that COULD point to where this journey is going, we still don't have anything concrete to go on. However, with the teased existence of the United Alliance of Evil, could we see another mammoth Ranger team-up on the cards?
