Comic Book Review - Power Rangers Prime #1

Image
Forget everything you know about the Power Rangers…  It’s been a few months since BOOM! Studios and Melissa Flores concluded their year-long swan song final arc to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers . While the original Rangers have their well-earned rest, we're back into Power Ranger territory with a whole new series - and if this opening issue is anything to go by, it’s going to get very dark.  Back at the helm is Melissa Flores who’s joined this time by artist Michael Yg . With this opening issue, the duo do a very good job in building their new utopian world, to then start in motion the one simple thing that’s going to make it all crash down. So what makes this new interpretation so different to what we’ve seen before?  With Power Rangers Prime #1 , Flores wastes no time in showing us how this new universe differs from that of what we’ve previously seen. The main thing here is that the Eltarians have seemingly colonised planet Earth. With Zordon’s people bringing a wealt...

Comic Book Review - Crocodile Black #1

Image
A strong start to this new series from BOOM! Studios… Crocodile Black tells the story of Danny, a youngster who’s struggling with his own mental health in a world that’s currently in the tight grip of the COVID 19 pandemic. A chance encounter during a routine delivery job then sees Danny’s world forever change as he becomes the titular Crocodile Black. Now a murderous and quite effective killer, Danny takes his fight to the criminal underworld clad in a pair of black crocodile skin boots. It’s not every day that a comic is grounded so far within the real world. Here Phillip Kennedy Johnson wastes no time in taking us back to 2021 when the world was still in the throws of COVID 19. From mentions of empty fast food restaurants, to having to wear a mask during a trip to the grocery store, the world of Crocodile Black is very much part of our own. It’s this framework that also makes lead character Danny quite relatable too as we see him attempting to keep some sense of normality in a wo...

The answer to this question has to be a monumental one for Kimberly to sever all ties with her friends, and for Jason to go rogue. While Amy Jo Johnson and Matt Hotson briefly touched upon this event during their opening act, it’s here in the second issue that we explore that fateful event on the Moon.  The main bulk of this second outing is acted through flashbacks that catches the reader up on past events. Told via Kimberly’s viewpoint in the present as she speaks to Trini’s daughter we see the climatic battle between the Rangers, Rita, and Lord Zedd. After their victory the team goes their separate ways, yet remain tied together through their time as Power Rangers.
