Comic Book Review - Power Rangers Unlimited: Heir To Darkness #1

Rob Lake reviews Power Rangers Unlimited: Heir To Darkness #1... Ask any Power Ranger fan to name their top three villains and you'll no doubt hear the name, Astronema. This new one-shot, that ties directly into the events of both Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers delves into Astronema's checkered past.  "Before she became a Power Ranger, a young girl named Karone was kidnapped by bounty hunters and brainwashed into the assassin known as Astronema by two of the greatest threats in the galaxy -  Dark  Specter and Ecliptor. But what is  Dark  Spector's true plan...and what does it mean for the new Mighty Morphin & Power Rangers teams?" While this question is still largely unanswered writer L.L. McKinny gives us a fantastic origin story that takes us on an emotional rollercoaster of how a girl named Karone became the much loved villain.  Heir To Darkness begins in media res as we see Astronema in the midst of a battle against a team of

Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Prog 2225

Rob Lake reviews 2000AD Prog 2225... It's Wednesday yet again and here in the UK things are slowly returning to normal. This can also be said for this week's Prog. After last weeks double helping of Feral & Foe II , we're back to the normality of a five strip Prog. And it's a beauty... Ken Niemand is back with another Dredd outing in A Penitent Man . More strange goings-on in Thistlebone: Poisoned Roots . KEK-W takes us on another journey to Deadworld with Visions of Deadworld . More terror in the return of Terror Tales . Finally, fantasy and comedy collide in Feral & Foe II. Judge Dredd: A Penitent Man - Part 1 Niemand  and Dredd seem to be going hand-in-hand these last few months with the writer cementing his status up there with modern Dredd alumni, Mike Carroll and Rob Williams.  This time Niemand brings us a tale of former Judge, Asher. Asher's been an inmate of Titan Penitentiary these last 20-years and now he's back on the 'mean

Advanced Comic Review - Evil Genius 2: World Domination (Companion Magazine)

Rob Lake checks out the Evil Genius 2: World Domination (Companion Magazine)... This 48-page special magazine features interviews with the creative team behind the game, character profiles of all the new playable characters and a rundown of the new special features. Written by Kate Heartfield ( The Magician’s Workshop ) and Karl Stock ( Future Shocks ), and drawn by Elkys Nova ( Tammy & Jinty ) and Leigh Wortley ( And Then Everybody Died ), the brand new comic book stories explore the world and characters of Evil Genius 2. Much like the weekly 2000 AD Progs , this companion magazine takes an almost serialised look into the world of Evil Genius 2.   Greeting us on the first page is an introduction by Rebellion CEO (and follower of this very blog), Jason Kingsley . Kingsley uses this opening paragraph to give some backstory to the game as well as its development from the original title from Elixir Studios.  The magazine then introduces us to the titular Evil Genius&#

Comic Book Review: ComicScene Annual 2021

Rob Lake reviews ComicScene Annual 2021... Remember when you'd wake up on Chistmas morning and there would be a classic hardback comic annual sitting under the tree? Well,  ComicScene does, and they've taken a trip back in time with the ComicScene Annual 2021. It's a tradition that's been around for donkey's years. My parents brought me an annual every year, and I do to my kids too. With the discovery of the  ComicScene Annual, I now have the excuse to buy my very own. The ComicScene Annual 2021 features twenty all-new stories from a variety of writers and artists. These stories are all told within a gorgeous 116-page hardback annual (also available in softback). On opening the cover it was great to see the amount of variety on offer. There were a few names I was familiar with such as Sarah Millman, Samuel George London,  and both (friends of Geek Culture Reviews ) Alan Holloway and Ed Doyle . But there were more than a few writers and ar

Novel Review: The SheerGlam Conspiracy

Rob Lake reviews The SheerGlam Conspiracy... Fresh off of the heels of reviewing Blazer! to then having the privilege of speaking to the man behind it all - Steve MacManus . It wasn't long before I dived into Steve's novel, The SheerGlam Conspiracy. This novel not only ties into the genesis (and revival) of the now physical Blazer! comic book, but also takes a satirical look into MacManus ' past working upon various comics. It's a hilarious look into office politics and one-upmanship with a surprisingly dark undertone.  The SheerGlam Conspiracy focuses on the goings-on of two comic book publishers and is set within the comic heyday of 1973. The staff of rival publishers, Goodenough Publications and Tartan Editions are at the height of a bitter circulation war with each company trying to get the upper hand on the other. The majority of the book focuses on the creation of a new weekly comic with the codename of GNP 13, and Tartan Editions endeavour of findi

Video Game Review: Samurai Shodown - Xbox Series X

Rob Lake reviews Samurai Shodown on Xbox Series X... I have a massive soft spot for old arcade beat'em up's. Games like Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat and King of Fighters are games that I grew up with. Me and my friends I still to this day meet up and go toe-to-toe on a selection of retro titles that we own between us and often reminisce over past glories or the end of particular friends winning streak (you know who you are). To go that extra mile one of my friends even owns his own arcade cabinet (or three) that he is collecting official boards for!  I jumped at the chance to review Samurai Shodown as the series has been a favourite of mine for quite a few years. Samurai Shodown is the newest instalment in the Samurai Shodown (Samurai Spirits) series and has been developed by SNK . Sancho is the nineteenth game released in the franchise and has taken the series back to its roots in the form of a soft reboot. The overall setting of the game takes place betw
