Comic Book Review: ComicScene Annual 2021
Rob Lake reviews ComicScene Annual 2021...
Remember when you'd wake up on Chistmas morning and there would be a classic hardback comic annual sitting under the tree? Well, ComicScene does, and they've taken a trip back in time with the ComicScene Annual 2021.
It's a tradition that's been around for donkey's years. My parents brought me an annual every year, and I do to my kids too. With the discovery of the ComicScene Annual, I now have the excuse to buy my very own.
The ComicScene Annual 2021 features twenty all-new stories from a variety of writers and artists. These stories are all told within a gorgeous 116-page hardback annual (also available in softback).
On opening the cover it was great to see the amount of variety on offer. There were a few names I was familiar with such as Sarah Millman, Samuel George London, and both (friends of Geek Culture Reviews) Alan Holloway and Ed Doyle. But there were more than a few writers and artists that I wasn't familiar with, which to be fair was great!
If you've followed Geek Culture Reviews for a while you would know that I've heavily gotten into the British Independent comic scene. So seeing independent work showcased here was a real treat. Much like every anthology some strips simply don't gel with the reader, and there are the odd couple included here. But regardless the sheer range of stories on offer will appeal to a wide range of readers with various interests and tastes. If anything upon reading the annual, it has made me appreciate the wide-range of talent that we have in this world to give us these small escapes into imagination.
Normally when I talk about comics I review each one in the term. But with the ComicScene Annual 2021, it's unfair to base an overall score on something that I may not have gotten or liked. So due to this, there won't be an overall score at the end of this review. I will say that I enjoyed everything that this annual has to offer. It's a well thought out annual that appeals to a wide range of tastes and if anything opens the reader up to a whole world of different writers and artists to discover.
