Comic Book Review - Power Rangers Prime #1

Image
Forget everything you know about the Power Rangers…  It’s been a few months since BOOM! Studios and Melissa Flores concluded their year-long swan song final arc to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers . While the original Rangers have their well-earned rest, we're back into Power Ranger territory with a whole new series - and if this opening issue is anything to go by, it’s going to get very dark.  Back at the helm is Melissa Flores who’s joined this time by artist Michael Yg . With this opening issue, the duo do a very good job in building their new utopian world, to then start in motion the one simple thing that’s going to make it all crash down. So what makes this new interpretation so different to what we’ve seen before?  With Power Rangers Prime #1 , Flores wastes no time in showing us how this new universe differs from that of what we’ve previously seen. The main thing here is that the Eltarians have seemingly colonised planet Earth. With Zordon’s people bringing a wealt...

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #106… If you’re a Power Ranger fan, this week has been quite the treat. Not only have Netflix released the trailer for their upcoming  Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always special, Melissa Flores is also back with yet another stellar performance with MMPR #106. Since taking over from Ryan Parrot 6 issues ago, Flores has taken the Power Rangers in an completely different direction. While large Eltarian invasions, and Empyrial threats are a thing of the past, Flores has brought back one of the Rangers more insidious foes - Rita Repulsa. However, in doing so the fan-favorite villain has had one almighty makeover. And when Rita - know known as Mistress Vile - swiftly defeats Lord Zedd…well you know she means business!  MMPR #106 continues the tradition of starting things off back in the past. This time around we’re treated to a duel between Lord Zedd and Rita. With Zedd having the upper hand, he offers Rita a saving grace, leave ...

Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #104

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #104... In need of some much-needed TLC, long-time adversary, Rita Repulsa has had a renaissance under Misty Flores ' care. She's gone from being banished by Lord Zedd, to returning in a blaze of glory as the resurgent Mistress Vile. But how did this change come to be? And what ramifications does it have for the Power Rangers and Earth?  Much like Lord Zedd, Rita's history is just as mysterious. While Kyle Higgins  and Ryan Parrott each brought much-needed backstory to Rita, it's now Flores' turn to add another chapter. With revelations - and more than a few shocking moments - Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #104 is one you won't want to miss.  MMPR #104 is entirely devoted to Rita as we see her gradual transformation into Mistress Vile. We kick things off with Mistress Vile trying again to break Matt's resolve. She tells him that his sacrifice was in vain and that he means nothing to his so-called friends. T...

Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II #1

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II #1... It's hard to believe that it's been three years since Ryan Parrott first treated us to a team-up for the ages. Across the 5-issue mini-series, the Ranger and Turtle worlds collided as Tommy went missing, and Shredder ended up with the power of the Dragon Coin. And that's before the Turtles became Power Rangers themselves!  The original mini-series was a stunning piece of work. Parrott tapped into the highs of both franchises to create a rollercoaster thrill ride that started at 10 and didn't cool down. It had everything that a Power Rangers  and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan would want in a team-up between the two heavyweights. Now back with a sequel it also begs the question of whether  Ryan Parrott can top the previous installment. And while we're only one issue in, the answer is looking like a resounding yes!   So, let's dive in... Opening up onto the rooftops of...

Comic Book Review - Power Rangers #22

Image
Rob reviews Power Rangers #22... As the Power Rangers universe heads to that special oversized 100th issue, Ryan Parrott gives us his swansong story for the Omega Rangers. The setup for #100 being set up across Power Rangers for several months now. With the Death Ranger finally making his introduction - and subsequent power play - Power Rangers #22 (Legacy #99) is the issue where everything changes.  Much like with Lord Zedd's origin story way back in  Mighty Morphin #10, I'm going to approach this review with as few spoilers as possible. While I won't delve into the bulk of the plot - be warned that some minor details may slip through.  Power Rangers #22 continues to follow the two battles that kicked off during the last issue. On Safehaven, Journey and Kevor are still dealing with Garrison Vox and his followers who have taken Arkon hostage. With all this going on we then have the Omega Rangers who have seemingly fallen straight into Andros' plan and now c...

Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #22

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #22... With Kimberly and Tommy still captive within the pocket dimension, Mat Groom signs off his Mighty Morphin  tenure with optimism, endings, and a look at how great the colour pink is! Mighty Morphin picks up straight from where the last issue left us with Kimberly and Tommy testing the new metallic armour within the picket dimensions. Due to weird 'Morphin Grid' shenanigans, the pair find themselves cut off from reality, and at the mercy of a few foes of future Rangers - mainly those from Jungle Fury, Dino Charge, and Lost Galaxy. When then follows is a pretty decent action scene as the duo comes under assault from these new foes. With Tommy receiving the brunt of the punishment, this forces Kimberly to retreat further into the Pocket Dimension with an unconscious Tommy.  With Kim already having a conscious of faith, things don't look too good. Well, that's until the Pink Emissary shows up. While the celestial bei...

Comic Book Review - Power Rangers #21

Image
Rob reviews Power Rangers #21... The Rangers are well and truly on the path to that landmark #100th issue. With Ryan Parrott teasing that issue #100 won't leave a dry eye in the house. What does he have in store?  Well, right now we're still thick into the build-up and as such it's another "normal" day in the office for the Omega Rangers. After Andros interrogated the captured Xurix in the last issue, XI has discovered the location of the Astro Megaship - which just so happens to be deep within Xurix-held territory. With the Xurix interested in the contents of a locked room, and with Darkonda on his way to collect said content - time is running out.  As such Andros intends to infiltrate the Astro Megaship on his own as some kind of penance for his past failings. Yet, in true Ranager fashion, Jason convinces the Red Astro Ranger to allow himself, Yale, Trini, and Zack to tag along. What follows is a VERY interesting set of events that not only introduc...

Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #21

Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #21... With both Ranger teams still on Earth after their recent ordeals, Mighty Morphin #21 continues to deal with both teams reflection on what it means to be a Power Ranger. With Jason still greiving, and Kimberly having a crisis of faith, are we about to see a shake up within the Rangers and their Omega counterparts?  It will come as no suprise that this issue also draws its main focus on one particular member of the team. So far Mat Groom has quite rightly fixed his attention on Rocky, who up until now has been a bit of a blank slate. This time around, Groom continues to build upon Kimberly's reservations that as Power Rangers they are ultimately expendable. These thoughts haven't been helped by the team feeling the effect of Jason's mothers death, and that a normal shopping trip with Trini reopens Kim's world to the events of 'Shattered Grid'.  While normally Kimberly is portrayed as one of the more confi...

Comic Book Review - Power Rangers #20

Image
Rob reviews Power Rangers #20... Both the Power Rangers and Omega Rangers find themselves reunited once again back on Earth. Brought together by the untimely death of Jason's mom, it's a sombre time for reflection for many members of both teams. However, evil is stirring as dark machinations begin to make their play. With Safehaven under the imminent threat of invasion, what lies inside of the Omega Vault?  As you can imagine, Power Rangers #20 is a very Jason-centric issue. Of course, it has to be! Back on Earth to attend the funeral of his late mother, we see a side to the Omega Ranger that's rarely explored. If anything it's in this issue we see the real Jason. While he's had the mantle of responsibility resting firmly on his shoulders for several years now, it's here where we see the Omega Ranger's vulnerability.  Power Rangers #20 is certainly a touching issue as Ryan Parrott explores Jason's grief and his relationship with his father...
