Comic Book Review - Nocterra #2

Rob Reviews Nocterra #2...

The first issue of Nocterra was a fantastic read from cover to cover. Set within a post-apocalyptic world that's been shrouded in darkness where people seemingly turn into hideous monsters, Nocterra plays on the human fear of darkness and what goes bump in the night. Nocterra #2 continues these themes, whilst introducing the series' mysterious bad guy.

Last time, we met Val, badass trucker who's taken on the 'monster of all jobs'. In order to save her brother - who's infected with the monster-turning virus. Val agrees to transport two people who claim that they can not only bring the Sun back to humanity, but also provide a way to cure her brother. Naturally this draws the attention of some bad guys, which is what writer, Snyder focuses on now.

As far as the big bad goes his identity is still quite literally shrouded in darkness. What we do get to see is his motives and methods to get what he wants - Val's current fare. The fact that he can destroy a truck by touching it, sets this person up as someone you probably shouldn't mess with. It's an interesting introduction that teases you with the semblance of an identity, yet keeps so many secrets under its dark hood.

Away from 'Mr. Bad', Snyder dives into more detail on how this post-apocalyptic society works. More interestingly is that we also see more interaction between Val and her passengers, especially once she learns that they're being hunted by the mysterious bad guys.

Tony S.Daniel and Tomeu Morey continue to deliver this world in a believable fashion. Considering the world is shrouded in darkness there is a great deal of light throughout. The scene within the Neon Grove is a delightful double page spread filled with vibrant colours. Overall the use of light is extremely well done and in clear contrast to the ever present darkness. Characters are all detailed incredibly well, and Daniel gives some gorgeous details in his characters, as well as the issues only monster.

Nocterra is best described as The Walking Dead meets Pitch Black. There's so much room for this comic to grow and I implore everyone to read it.

Rating 10/10
