Comic Book Review - The Dead Lucky #1

Image
Rob reviews The Dead Lucky #1... Comics that deal with the ugliness of war are not a new thing. Countless times we've seen various characters attempt to adjust to normal life whilst coping with various degrees of PTSD or other side-effects of prolonged combat and loss. The Dead Lucky tells the story of Bibiana Lopez-Yang, a recently discharged soldier who's back on home soil. Not only is Bibi now having to adjust to the traumatic stress that the front line has left her with - but she's also able to conduct electricity. With her home neighbourhood under the threat of an imminent gang war, and a greedy technology corporation controlling the city, Bibi now has to protect her loved ones from harm.  Set within a futuristic version of San Francisco, The Dead Lucky opens with the scenes of a city at war. Due to rampant crime, the tech company Morrow has taken control of the city's streets. Utilising high-tech drones and surveillance, Morrow aims on cracking down on...

Comic Book Review - Nocterra #5

Image
Rob reviews Nocterra #5... Its been a long journey for Val, Emory, and Bailey. Not only have they had to contend with Em's transformation, but they're also being relentlessly hunted by the ever mysterious "Blacktop Bill". So when the reality of a sanctuary against the encroaching darkness is found - you'd surely take it, right?  Nocterra #5 is good at foreshadowing what's to come within its now staple flashback scene. With Emory and Val sort of safe within a refugee centre, the siblings are reassured that their infected parents would soon be cursed. Of course, this is an outright lie and you don't need to be a massive sci-fi fan to realise that they're either being dissected or are long dead. Anway, with past events still fresh we also know that this "sanctuary" isn't going to be a haven for long.  Nocterra #5 then flashes back to the present as we're introduced to a somewhat familiar scene. The trio has reache...

Comic Book Review - Time Before Time #1

Image
Rob reviews Time Before Time #1... Time Before Time is a new series from Image Comics that's been written by Declan Shalvey and Rory McConville . The story follows Tatsuo and Oscar, two time-travelling delivery men who use their job to escape a pretty grim future. The only thing that stands in their way is the Syndicate, a criminal organisation that also happens to be Tatsuo and Oscar's employer. What could go wrong?  Time travel isn't a new concept when it comes to comic books. When used correctly the concept can open up for some pretty remarkable storytelling. Yet on the other hand it can also make for some pretty dire circumstances too. Thankfully Time Before Time is the former. It's got a great premise that's backed up by a strong atmosphere and some stellar artwork. To compare Time Before Time I'd say it's a mixture of Looper and Twelve Monkeys with a side order of Terminator . This opening issue starts in 1987, as a man named Ta...

Comic Book Review - Nocterra #2

Image
Rob Reviews Nocterra #2... The first issue of Nocterra was a fantastic read from cover to cover. Set within a post-apocalyptic world that's been shrouded in darkness where people seemingly turn into hideous monsters, Nocterra plays on the human fear of darkness and what goes bump in the night.  Nocterra #2 continues these themes, whilst introducing the series' mysterious bad guy.  Last time, we met Val, badass trucker who's taken on the 'monster of all jobs'. In order to save her brother - who's infected with the monster-turning virus. Val agrees to transport two people who claim that they can not only bring the Sun back to humanity, but also provide a way to cure her brother. Naturally this draws the attention of some bad guys, which is what writer, Snyder focuses on now.  As far as the big bad goes his identity is still quite literally shrouded in darkness. What we do get to see is his motives and methods to get what he wants - Val...
