ComicScene Top 10 List - Reaction

So the good folk over at ComicScene (comicscene.org) asked its fans to vote for their top ten comics of the last year.

With 2020 being the washout that it was, with the fallout continuing today - I write this currently sitting in yet another UK national lockdown. A fair few of us took up new past times or rediscovered old loves to past the time.

With voting for the top 10, everything was to play for. There was no shortlist, just an option to input YOUR top comics of 2020. Naturally, I had to vote for the three comics that I have a soft spot for 2000AD, The77 and Sentinel (reviews coming soon). And it seems that I wasn't alone in voting this way too!

What came as a surprise was that there was one single Marvel offering (Immortal Hulk) and nothing from DC in the top 10. What we did get however was a nice nod to British comics from Pat Mills - Spacewarp (No.9) to Shift (No.8) and even Drok of the Reds (No.7). It's great to see that the UK comics scene is 1. Going strong and 2. Is as popular as ever.

The top 3 are what I'm here for which both came as a welcomed surprise and one that shows that these three are the heavyweights of the British comic scene.

Number 3 - Sentinel

The mini-digest created by Alan Holloway and Ed Doyle has been one of those surprise hits of 2020. The self-contained stories have been inspired by Starblazer. The duo's latest issue Sentinel Issue #5 - Kazana The Slayer is available now and can be brought by clicking here. With Issue #6 coming to Kickstarter in February. It's also worth noting that Sentinal pipped the mighty Judge Dredd Megazine in the poll, with the Ol' Meg coming in at number 4!

Number 2 - The77

Much like Sentinel, The77 has achieved a relevant amount of success in 2020. The oversized bi-monthly anthology features a wealth of stories by a veritable who's-who of established and upcoming talent. With an ethos that takes us back to the comics of old, The77 both fond memories as well as incredibly modern storytelling. Issue #4 of The77 is also available to buy right now.

Number 1 - 2000AD

It just had to be, didn't it?  ComicScenes number one comic of 2020 is of course 2000AD. The long-running publication has recently celebrated its 43rd year in bringing thrills into our homes. With showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon 2000AD deserves its top spot. But, with the likes of Sentinel and The77 creeping up, will the long-running weekly magazine be in the top spot in 2021...
