Board Game Review - Five Nights at Freddy’s: Survive Until 6AM Security Breach Edition

Welcome back to the Pizzaplex…

For those who know me away from Geek Culture Reviews, October is usually an expensive month as it’s my daughter Grace’s birthday. While  she gets the normal haul of gifts from me & her Mum, and her Grandparents, my brothers - and family friends - often opt to give her cash instead. Now 14 she’s heading into the territory of more complex board games and as such with her birthday cash she came home today with a copy of Five Nights At Freddy’s: Survive Until 6AM Security Breach Edition that she picked up in our local HMV.

Of course it wasn’t long before we sat down to play it, and after recently finishing the video game of FNAF: Security Breach - we were both eager to venture back to the Freddy Fazbear Pizzaplex. But did we survive?

Created by Funko, FNAF: Survive Until 6AM Security Breach Edition is a simple card game that’s a spin-off to the original ‘Survive Until 6AM’ title. Themed around Security Breach, up to two players need to survive until 6AM to escape the sprawling Pizzaplex. With help from Freddy you’ll have to dodge the likes of Vanny, Monty, Roxy, and Chica all while managing Freddy’s dwindling power supply and your own anxiety.

The basic setup and premise works in the same way whether you’re flying solo, or playing with a friend. Players draw cards from each of the four rooms. Then you’ll have to expend battery power to either react to the cards, or allow their displayed actions to play out. As for the animatronics, by not reacting to their presence, they can move right up to your location which then results in a game over.

While it does sound pretty simple, the games rules are overly complicated. The included rule sheet does break down each action, yet it’s by actually playing the game that it starts to make sense. We’re currently on our fourth play through and are still unsure if we’re even playing it correctly or not. Each game session can last anywhere from 2-20 minutes, with each encounter being based solely down to chance. While the animatronic starting locations are pre-defined, a simple wrong action - or poor dice rolls - can lead your game ending before the clocks hit 1AM. Game sessions are further expanded by the necessity to shuffle each rooms deck of cards after each action. It does get incredibly frustrating, but as FNAF fans we really didn’t mind.

As for actually winning the game, Grace and myself haven’t gotten past 4:30AM. This has either been down to being outright caught by the animatronics, or Freddy running out of power - to then be caught. It’s definitely difficult to “win” and having a degree of luck does factor into whether you’ll walk out of the Pizzaplex in the morning. It leaves very little down to skill, and even in the two player version the winner comes down to who didn’t die first, or who has the most power remaining come 6AM. Neither player has any interaction with each other, and it essentially boils down to two players playing separately at the same time.

Overall, if you’re a fan of single player board games, or after a lite cooperative experience then Five Nights at Freddy’s: Survive Until 6AM Security Breach Edition is probably worth playing playing. However there isn’t really a lot of interaction aside from constantly flipping/shuffling cards, and even with two players the Pizzaplex can be a lonely place

Rating 5.5/10
