Retrospective: How Five Nights at Freddy’s Quietly Redefined Horror Games

Image
It has been over a decade since Five Nights at Freddy’s first flickered onto our screens, quietly released on August 8, 2014, by a relatively unknown indie developer named Scott Cawthon. At the time, it seemed like just another quirky horror game in the ever-growing pile of let’s play bait on Steam. A game where you sit still in a security office and monitor malfunctioning animatronics through grainy security feeds? Sounds niche, right? Yet here we are, several games, books, and a big-screen adaptation later, and FNaF (as it’s now colloquially known) is no longer just a one-hit wonder. It is a full-blown pop culture phenomenon, having influenced the indie horror space more than perhaps any other series in recent memory. Looking back now, it is easy to forget just how strange and refreshing the original game was when it first released — and how much of its DNA can still be felt in the genre today. The Horror of Helplessness What made the original Five Nights at Freddy’s so different fro...

Board Game Review - Five Nights at Freddy’s: Survive Until 6AM Security Breach Edition

Welcome back to the Pizzaplex… For those who know me away from Geek Culture Reviews, October is usually an expensive month as it’s my daughter Grace’s birthday. While  she gets the normal haul of gifts from me & her Mum, and her Grandparents, my brothers - and family friends - often opt to give her cash instead. Now 14 she’s heading into the territory of more complex board games and as such with her birthday cash she came home today with a copy of Five Nights At Freddy’s: Survive Until 6AM Security Breach Edition that she picked up in our local HMV.  Of course it wasn’t long before we sat down to play it, and after recently finishing the video game of FNAF: Security Breach - we were both eager to venture back to the Freddy Fazbear Pizzaplex. But did we survive?  Created by Funko, FNAF: Survive Until 6AM Security Breach Edition is a simple card game that’s a spin-off to the original ‘Survive Until 6AM’ title. Themed around Security Breach, up to two players need to sur...

Video Game Review - Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach

Rob reviews Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach on Xbox Series X… Over the last couple of nights I’ve found myself fully enthralled with FNAF: Security Breach . It’s not my first rodeo within Scott Cawthon’s world, however it’s the one that’s captured my attention the most. The vast interconnected world of the Freddy Fazbear Mega Pizza Plex is a far cry from the cramp corridors of the traditional pizzeria that made the original such a cult classic. Not only does Cawthon give us a bigger playground to get lost in, it allows for a greater narrative to be shared across. When you also factor in that the whole Five Nights at Freddy’s narrative has been entwined since it’s debut - more story is a good thing!  The narrative in Security Breach is more robust than previous titles in the series. Taking the role of Gregory, a young boy who finds himself trapped within the Mega Pizza Plex, along with an unexpected ally, Gregory will have to survive the night whilst trying to uncover the d...

Steel Wool Studios reveals gameplay for upcoming horror title: Five Nights At Freddy's Security Breach... The latest release of animatronic fuelled horror: Five Nights At Freddy's: Security Breach is just around the corner (no pun intended). Set within a new location, players are once again set to contend with Freddy and his robot pals. Set within the sprawling Mega Plex, Security Breach aims to be the biggest location so far in FNAF's history.  Speaking exclusively on the PlayStation Blog  Co-Founder/Creative Director, Steel Wool Studios - Jason Topolski had the following to say: “Since its launch in 2014, Five Nights at Freddy’s has grown at an exponential rate, gaining a unique following as a “horrific” cult-classic. Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza is no longer limited to small pizzerias, as they have now opened the Mega Pizza Plex in Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach. Security Breach is by far the most ambitious Five Nights at Freddy’s game yet! ...
