Comic Book Review - Basilisk #4

Rob reviews Basilisk #4...

The last few issues of BOOM! Studio's Basilisk has been slowly building up to the unavoidable conflict between the mysterious Chimera and the human, Hannah.

So far we've seen the Chimera massacre their way through pretty much everyone who's stood in their way. The highlight of this has been each issues opening which has detailed the Chimera's awakening, as well as why Hannah's out to stop them. Now after weeks of planning, the Chimera - and their "Faithful" - are striding into the lion's den as Hannah and her Chimera ally - Regan await.

Writer Cullen Bunn gives us a pretty action-packed issue as Hannah's revenge plan comes to fruition. It's a pretty bloody battle that sees quite a few explosions and plenty of bodies. Considering the Chimera are laden with superpowers of their own, Hannah's almost guerilla tactics work to bring the group almost to its knees. Yet, she's only human and it isn't long before Jimmy-Boy manages to knock her down which sets up Vanessa to send Hannah to a fiery demise. However, whilst targeting Hannah the group had forgotten about Regan who soon steps up to take on Vanessa with some pretty startling consequences.

Basilisk #4 is a great addition to the series so far. Everything that's been building up over the last issues has finally started to boil over. Bunn brings plenty of pace to proceedings as Hannah battles against the odds to avenge her families demise. She's studied her foe for years as Cullen Bunn demonstrates just how prepared the grieving mother is. As I mentioned above she's almost fighting a guerilla war as she's hiding her scent from her foes and attacking with bear traps, claymore mines, and a little superpower of her own.

There's also plenty here away from the action that drives the plot forward. With Manny's vision - that's seen by both Regan and Vanessa, and the tease of more bloodshed to come

Both Jonas Scharf and Alex Guimarães shine throughout the issue with some pretty impressive scenes. The ferocity of the battle is well illustrated with plenty of strong line work from Scharf and vibrant colours from Guimarães. Great facial work is abundant too as Scharf paints an almost nonchalant expression on the Chimera as they attempt to battle a determined Hannah.

Contemplating on what's teased come to this issues conclusion, this one for from over. And I can't wait to see what comes next!

Rating - 9/10
