Comic Book Review - Basilisk #11

Image
Rob reviews Basilisk #11... As the chess pieces start to play out their checkmate moves, Cullen Bunn brings yet more surprises to the giant game of horror that's Basilisk ! Basilisk #11 continues shortly after the events of the previous issue. Hannah has found herself in the company of Barret, Vanessa is revisiting her past, while Regan is out to stop the Chimera's awakening. It's here that Bunn delves more into these motives as the four cast members draw their lines.  The main bulk of #11 deals with the relationship between Vanessa and Regan, whilst simultaneously adding context to past events. In typical style, we open up in the past as "The Five" are sent into the cave that houses the omnipotent Chimera. As they venture deeper, the group encounters the skeletal remains of those who've attempted the journey before. It soon becomes clear that Vanessa is retracing this journey back in the present day. She's determined to awaken the Chimera from...

Comic Book Review - Basilisk #6

Rob reviews Basilisk #6... Things have certainly started to heat up in Cullen Bunn 's rural horror - Basilisk . Over the last couple of issues we've seen both Hannah and the Chimera come into direct conflict. With the first battle resulting in the death of Manny, Hannah still has the remaining four Chimera to go. Yet as each dies, the remaining grow stronger. Whilst Manny's powers transfered to Regan - who's to say that lightning will strike twice?  Basilisk #6 picks up straight after the events of #5. The Chimera group have laid seige to a shopping mall, and both Hannah and Regan are close behind. Meanwhile Barrett is organising the Faithful to come to the Chimera's aid, yet his actual agenda seems  to differ from that of head honcho, Vanessa.  Much like that seen in previous issues, we're taken back to events of the past. This time we're following Hannah as she attends a work conference. There's a great focus on her family thro...

Comic Book Review - Basilisk #5

Rob reviews Basilisk #5... Along with both Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers , Basilisk is the other BOOM! Studios comic that I eagerly await for the preview to drop into my inbox. Cullen Bunn 's ultra-violent thriller does an excellent job of leaving the reader wanting more. Straight from issue #1, we've seen the brutality of the Chimera, yet we still don't quite know exactly who - or what - they are. While some (and I use the term loosely) questions have been answered, such as Hannah's connection to the events and her need for revenge/closure. Others remain unanswered... Back in issue #4  Basilisk wrapped up its first story arc. We got a pulse-pounding battle that not only highlighted the viciousness of both the Chimera - but also Hannah. With the ensuing battle resulting in a loss for the Chimera, we're now in the in-between. Before his demise, Manny reached out to Regan to divulge just what the Chimera's purpose is. Whilst this is still unknow...

Comic Book Review - Basilisk #4

Rob reviews Basilisk #4... The last few issues of BOOM! Studio's Basilisk has been slowly building up to the unavoidable conflict between the mysterious Chimera and the human, Hannah. So far we've seen the Chimera massacre their way through pretty much everyone who's stood in their way. The highlight of this has been each issues opening which has detailed the Chimera's awakening, as well as why Hannah's out to stop them. Now after weeks of planning, the Chimera - and their "Faithful" - are striding into the lion's den as Hannah and her Chimera ally - Regan await.  Writer Cullen Bunn gives us a pretty action-packed issue as Hannah's revenge plan comes to fruition. It's a pretty bloody battle that sees quite a few explosions and plenty of bodies. Considering the Chimera are laden with superpowers of their own, Hannah's almost guerilla tactics work to bring the group almost to its knees. Yet, she's only human and...

Comic Book Review - Basilisk #3

Rob reviews Basilisk #3... Basilisk   has gotten off to a real start over it's previous two issues. It's got a hell of a lot going on, and each issue seems to top the last on the "bloody massacre scale". Basilisk #3 is no different and ups the ante even more. Even with its horrific violence and gore, the story continues to stay the more memorable - not an easy thing to do!  This time out we catch up with the ever mysterious Chimera as they slowly make their way towards Regan and Hannah. While we still don't know the true origins of these beings, we are being shown their powers. This time around the massacre goes into more detail as we see Vannessa, Manny, Jimmy-Boy, and Cara deal with an unsuspecting roadside rest stop. It's a great choreographed scene as the foursome deal with the unsuspecting rest stop patrons.  Even with their horrific powers are the Chimera monsters? There's a somewhat God-like quality to their powers, and it's certain...

Comic Book Review - Basilisk #2

Image
Rob reviews Basilisk #2... Basilisk , the new original comic series from BOOM! Studios got off to quite a good start last month. While its opening issue was a little short on the overall story, writer Cullen Bunn included just enough to keep readers guessing. This time around, Basilisk #2 attempts to answer some of the questions while throwing more random acts of violence into the mix.  Last time out we had a brief introduction to Basilisk ' somewhat colourful cast of characters. Chief amongst these is the mysterious 'Chimera' - a group of individuals who put the kids from the  Village of the Damned to shame. Readers were also introduced to Hannah - who has a past with the Chimera, and Regan - one of the Chimera, and also Hannah's prisoner.  In terms of story Bunn uses this issue to further expand and establish what was started in issue 1. We get a horrific-yet-gorgeous account of the Chimera at work as they continue their past assault on tha...
