Comic Book Review - Snow Angels #3
Rob reviews Snow Angels #3...
Don't shoot me! Yes, I may have missed out on reviewing Snow Angels #2. No excuses really, I just plainly forgot! I really need to invest in a diary.
Anyway, apologies aside. I'm back with a look at Snow Angels #3...
Jeff Lemire and Jock's Snow Angels has been a fantastic series so far. While we're only three issues in, it's been a great mystery that's delivering some fantastic tension within its bleak, snow covered world.
The story so far has followed a Father and his two Daughters who survive this harsh world in the embrace of a vast spanning trench. In the opening issue their settlement was attacked by a mysterious character called the Snowman. Issue 2, then picks up with the family struggling to outrun not just the Snowman, but also the other horrors that lurk in the trench. This time around Snow Angels #3 sees Lemire and Jock deal directly with the Snowman whilst opening up more of the mystery of the trench.
Jeff Lemire has really delivered with #3. While his writing throughout the series has been fantastic, all the plotting so far has lead to this point. The mysterious Colden Ones, and even the trench it's self. The minimalistic dialogue keeps the story grounded to its trip of characters, yet allows you to discover things about the world with them. Already we're seeing that all is not as it seems, as are both Milli and Mae. It's interesting as it shows that this world is truly a mystery - even to its inhabitants.
There's some heartfelt moments to as both Milli and Mae threat about Pa facing the Snowman. And we get some insight into their family life as we find out why Mother is no longer with them. It's great as it not only adds depth to all three characters, we also see how and way Milli is how she is.
Jock's art continues to be incredible. The tonal blues and whites not only create a believable background theres also a sense of beauty within its destructiveness. There's a high amount of detail that adds that human quality to both the world and the characters. Pa, Milli, and Mae have plenty of characterisation about them in both Jocks drawings and Lemire's writing. They each feel relatable just as much as the cold frigid world that they inhabit. The Snowman is just as mysterious as his introduction back in #1, yet his untimely demise was both shocking and beautiful.
Snow Angels #3 continues to build upon the events of the previous 2 issues. Come this issues end, we're heading into uncharted territory as the characters attempt to survive this world. Overall its an interesting premise that will have you asking quite a lot of questions. I've got my theories, but I can't wait to see what happens
