Comic Book Review - Full Tilt Boogie

Rob reviews Full Tilt Boogie...

After a successful single introductory episode within 2000 AD Regened Prog 2130. Alex de Campi and Eduardo Ocana then jumped to the standard Progs with a full series of the amazing, Full Tilt Boogie

The story (synopsis down below) is fairly simple, but as the series progresses it becomes so much more than just an Intergalactic war.

“Tee, along with her grandmother and cat, is a wannabe bounty hunter, odd-jobbing across the galaxy in her ship the Full Tilt Boogie, constantly on the lookout for the bigger, better payday. Some days, though, it’s less bounty-hunting and more babysitting, especially when they rescue the narcissistic Prince Ifan from Debtor’s Prison. Accidentally sparking an intergalactic war, suddenly Tee finds herself chased across the universe by sacred knights and unstoppable undead warriors. Planet conquering, prince rescuing, and ramen eating – it’s all in a day’s work for the crew of the Full Tilt Boogie!”

Full Tilt Boogie plays out in the same style as a Saturday day morning cartoon. It's simple, fun, and full of life as the cast deal with both Prince Ifan and his menacing entourage - The Luxine Knights. Add in the last surviving member of a long-dead civilisation, a "space cat", and plenty of Ramen, Full Tilt Boogie is the comic equivalent of an anime space-opera.

The crew of the 'Boogie' are a mismatched assortment of characters, with each of them bringing their own style and flair to the proceedings. The main sense of the story is about family, as it is about a ragtag group of mercenaries. This family dynamic is explored throughout the adventure and come to the journeys end it's a whole new set up to what we started with.

Of course, each story has to have its figurative bad-guy. This comes in the form of the Luxine Knights from the planet Luxor. The Knights are as much an 'evil' mirror image of Tee and the FTB crew in that they're thrust together to "rescue" Prince Ifan from his rescuers. To make matters worse, the young knights are lead by the young Prince's sister - which naturally causes its issues as the story progresses.

De Campi's introduction to Full Tilt Boogie highlights the writers aims in bringing the series to a full run. With influences from Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers, Full Tilt Boogie is as much a homage to these groundbreaking animes, as it is a love letter from De Campi to them. And that's what makes Full Tilt Boogie such a fun, simple and highly attractive story. Eduardo Ocana delivers some fantastic artwork throughout Full Tilt Boogie. It's a lightweight, simplified style that brings feels a lot like its anime inspiration.

If you experienced Full Tilt Boogie through its run in the 2000 AD Progs/Regened, or you're coming at it fresh. This is a fantastic space opera that works well for both the Prog and Rengened target audiences. Alex De Campi and Eduardo Ocana have crafted an incredible story with Full Tilt Boogie, and there's so much more waiting to be explored.

Rating 10/10
