Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Prog 2227

Rob Reviews 2000 AD Prog 2227...

Phew! What a week. Since our last outing with Prog 2226, the UK is in a national state of mourning, lockdown-3 "electric boogaloo" has ended (sort-of), pubs are open, aaannnddd the weather control is going haywire.

One constant however is the weekly 2000 AD Progs. And this week in Prog 2227 it's more the same...

Dredd continues to investigate Asher in 'A Penitent Man', more strange goings on in Thistlebone, Ava Eastwood falls in Visions of Deadworld, body-swap nightmares in Feral & Foe, and finally part 2 of 'Chorus and the Ring'.

Judge Dredd: A Penitent Man - Part 3

Dredd and the SJS have quite the history and in 'A Penitent Man' the next chapter of that history is being written. So, former Judge and Titan inmate, Asher has revealed that the SJS have an operation in place to discourage any former Titan inmates from returning to Mega-City 1.

This then sets Dredd on a collision course with SJS Judge Buell for some target practice. As Dredd dives into the hornets nest, things are looking just as bad for Asher - the poor guy just can't seem to catch a break.

Ken Niemand is on the top of his game at the moment, with both 'A Penitent Man' and the Meg's own Megatropolis making for some excellent reading. Tom Foster and Chris Blyth continue to bring some excellent art and colours to the proceedings and I have yet another Lawmaster to add to the "sexy Lawmaster calendar".

Thistlebone: Poisoned Roots - Part 7

Seema is heading further and further into the rabbit hole that's Harrovale and the Thistlebone Cult. This weeks Seema's back in the company of Avril, the cult survivor who dragged her into this mess in the first place.

Eglinton and Davis are doing great work with Poisoned Roots. The slow burning horror of the Harrovale Woods is really building up steam. Is Seema just going mad or is she close to the truth? That's the beauty of Eglinton's writing, you just don't know. Davis has a gorgeous style to his art and his page breaking backgrounds really blur the conception of your tradition cell format.

Visons of Deadworld: Leigh

We're back with another side-story set within the world that's ultimately destroyed by the Dark Judges. This week Kek-W gives us insight into Eva Eastwood and why she's become a recluse within the main Deadworld strip.

Kek-W works wonders with 'Leigh'. It's a fantastic look into both Eastwoods world and the corruption that Sydney De'Ath is having upon the justice department. There's also a shocking cameo from Judge Fairfax too!

Dave Kendall's art works incredibly well I'm bringing Kek-W's twisted reality to life. Everything has a grim, dirty look to it, which shows just how bad things are within this doomed world. And it all started with the Bee's...

Tharg's 3Rillers Presents Chorus and the Ring - Part 2

Sister Evangelista's mission to recover the dead War-Pontiff's Signet Spiritus from the Rebels kicks up a gear this week. Naturally with any of Tharg's 3Rillers, it's not as simple as first seen.

It's full on action as James Peaty and Mike Collins bring us a fast flowing script, all backed up with some great space scenes. Add in the work of Dylan Teague and 'Chorus and the Ring' is an atmospheric beaut.

Feral & Foe II - Part 3

Things are going from bad to worse for body-swapped duo, Bode & Waith. Following the "bright idea" of companion, Krodun the group sets off in search of the Necromancer, Golgone.

I'm really enjoying Feral & Foe II, not only is its fantasy world extremely likeable, the characters are too. Dan Abnett gives us a trio who aren't short on dishing out the comedy, whilst getting the often bodged job done. It's a nice take on the 'Freaky Friday' formula set within a stunningly beautiful fantasy world.

Richard Elson nails the setting this week with some great illustrations and colour. This all comes together to make the Necromancer's lair that ever more deadly.

Rating 8/10
