Rob reviews 2000 AD Prog 2269...
Prog 2270 is just around the corner, and with it comes a whole new selection of thrill-powered stories all in one 48-page bumper special.
So, whilst we have this to look forward to, this week we're back with another done-in-one Judge Dredd, more dangerous goings on in The Order and Proteus Vex, yet another Terror Tale, and finally, we say goodbye to Inspector Mucha as Saphir wraps up.
Judge Dredd: 5 In The Cubes
Remember when you where a kid and all those after school clubs had a trip to the local police station? Mega-City 1 has that too! But rather than a quick trip to the station it's 5 hours in an Iso Cube. And to make it better Judge Dredd is leading the tour.
Arthur Wyatt is behind this latest done-in-one Dredd tale. We follow Juve, Chazzo Shelby as he's chosen to spend 5 hours in the Cube to hopefully steer him away from a projected life of crime.
5 In The Cubes is a great, simple strip that gives us a look into the inner workings of the Block-sized Iso prisons. But more importantly we get a look into the awful life that some Mega-City Cits lead. Nicolo Assirelli gives everything a claustrophobic, yet desolate feeling, whilst Gary Caldwell gives everyting a Regened feel. Which I guess is what this tales about...
Tharg's Terror Tales: Foreclosure
Another week, and there's another Terror Tale to whet the appetite. This time the terro comes from John Tomlinson and artist, Anna Morozova.
Whilst the story is a typical Terror Tale, the real beauty is Morozova's art. Every panel is filled with some gorgeous line work that's really highlighted by the black & white style. Scenes also flow together as the artwork guides us through Tomlinson's twisted script.
Here's hoping we seen Anna Morozova back in the Prog soon!
Saphir: Liaisons Dangereuses - Part 5 (Final Part)
We say goodbye to Kek-W's dimension jumping shenanigans this week as this second chapter of Saphir reaches its conclusion. To say that Inspector Mucha has had an easy ride is a serious understatement. Not only has he had to deal with saving Lady Sophia's child from the resident bad guy - Veridian. He's also had to get his head around all that dimension hopping craziness.
Throughout this series both David Roach and Peter Doherty have pulled out the stops to bring Kek's bizzare vision to life. If Tharg is to give us a third outing of Saphir, I'd love to see these three stay on board.
The Order: Fantastic Voyage - Part 8
There's more strange goings on as the remaining members of the Order tackle giant tentacle things.
As the shadows threaten to envelope everyone on the island, its poor Ben Franklin who takes one for the team. As such it's all back to sea as The Order continues their Fantastic Voyage. But were they safer on the island, and what about Ben Franklin?
I actually enjoyed this episode of The Order. For once I was able to take in what was going on to realise that The Order are really in some deep shit. Whilst I still don't see the bigger picture, I'm still hoping I finally see it soon!
As always John Burns continues to amaze me with his art work, which makes reading The Order worth it...
Proteus Vex: Desire Paths - Part 8
Seeing us out this week is the next installment of Proteus Vex. Over the last eight parts, Vex has really solidified itself as my favorite strip within the current Progs. Mike Carroll manages to amaze me each and every week with just how strange and bizzare Vex's universe is. Then narrative is also an intricate web of lies and deceit that's stretches back into Vex' first outing. It's extremely clever, and is one I don't want to see end in a hurry.
This week we're taken to a literal patchwork planet dubbed 'The Superstructure' as Vex continues his crusade against the Alliance. Once on the planets surface Vex meets with the Scorchers to enquire as to why Chancellor Bayron's memories have lead him to them. Things soon turn sour as Vex discovers yet another secret about the Obdurate War, which throws him further down the conspiracies path.
Jake Lynch continues to bring plenty of gorgeous artwork to this story. Each week we're treated to a different world or species, which helps to build this universe spanning adventure.
