“I Am the Law”: How Dredd (2012) Captures the Spirit of the Judge Dredd Mythos

Image
In the long shadow of comic book adaptations, Dredd stands as a lean, gritty, and faithful tribute to one of the most iconic antiheroes in comic history: Judge Dredd. Far removed from the neon kitsch and narrative misfires of the 1995 Judge Dredd film starring Sylvester Stallone, Dredd is a stripped-down, brutal, and grounded take on the lawman of Mega-City One. But more than just a hard-edged action flick, Dredd is deeply embedded in the lore and philosophy of the original 2000 AD comic series. Dredd is a film that doesn’t just adapt the character it’s portraying —it understands him. The being that would become synonymous with the faceless reality of justice first appeared within 2000 AD issue #2 back in 1977, and was the brainchild of writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra . Conceived during a time of political unrest and growing authoritarianism, Judge Joseph Dredd was a dark satire of fascism wrapped in the skin of a futuristic law enforcer. Set within Mega-City One, ...

Image
Rebellion have today revealed that the sold-out complete collection of ’80s horror comic Scream! is to be reprinted in time for Christmas… Celebrating 40 years since IPC launched the UK’s most iconic ‘horror’ anthology, this wonderfully horrifying single volume collects all of the strips included in the 15-issue run of Scream!. All copies of the hardcover collection sold out before it was due to hit shelves in May this year, but thanks to overwhelming popular demand a reprint is now its way and will arrive in the 2000 AD and Treasury of British Comics webshops and all good retailers in late November. Produced ‘from the depths’ of King’s Reach Tower by the mysterious ‘undead’ editor Ghastly McNasty, the first issue of Scream! was unleashed in March 1984. More tongue-in-cheek than horrific, the comic was an immediate hit with younger fans as it included a pair of fake vampire fangs attached to the cover and a number of fantastic new strips from such legendary talents as Alan Moore, John ...

Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Prog 2347

Can a vampire survive this hostile environment? It’s been quite a few weeks since I’ve delved into the Thrillverse. While my reviews of the “Galaxy’s Greatest’ have taken a hiatus, I’ve still been enjoying the Prog and all it’s thrills. So with last last weeks Regend putting a pause on proceedings, I thought what better time to make a return!  And with that, let’s get on with the show!  Stewart Kennedy Moore is on cover duties this week. It’s always a pleasure seeing Moore’s work, and his Portals & Black Goo inspiration this week takes a different style to his usual psychedelic delights. Meanwhile, under the hood and we find… Dredd gets closer to Kyle Asher in Judge Dredd: A Fallen Man, we say goodbye to Portals & Black Goo, Dexter blasts his way through the new world in Azimuth, Hershey’s past returns with a bang in  Cold In The Bones, and finally, Tharg returns with another 3Riller.  Judge Dredd: A Fallen Man - Part 6 ( Ken Niemand, Tom Foster, Chris Blyth,...
