Back to Prog 2265...
We sadly said goodbye to the phenomenal The Out last week. While Dan Abnett will return with another instalment of Cyd's adventures in the future, for now, we're back into the weirdness of Saphir with a new 5-parter.
Alongside this new outing for Inspector Mucha we have continuations to Working Girl, The Order, Kingmaker, and Proteus Vex.
Judge Dredd: Working Girl - Part 3
Just as things couldn't get worse for Mona, she's now been told that she could have a bomb in her backpack. Dredd is still in hot pursuit as Mona continues to stay one step ahead, and find out what exactly she got herself into.
So far, so good. Patrick Goddard is nailing the visuals for Working Girl. Each scene is packed full of detail that utilises a variety of angles to portray the action that's unfolding. MegaCity-1 is also used in a great way that gives this strip scale and encompasses everyday 'Meg' life.
Proteus Vex: Desire Paths - Part 4
Mike Carroll's sci-fi odyssey has picked up its pace over the last four parts. The journey that Vex and Navarch are on feels like it's going to be the defining chapter to the Proteus Vex saga. Much like how Empire Strikes Back is often looked at as a turning point within the original Star Wars trilogy, Desire Paths feels the same.
We learn more about the Obdurate War as Vex and Navarch Ko meet up with the new character, Turn. There's yet more backstory as the three exchange details over the Genesis Thread and how Vex feels personally responsible for the many Scorcher deaths that he may have caused.
Carroll has been building this story up for quite a while now, and each part adds yet another twist in the tale. Jake Lynch does a superb job in bringing all of these different ideas to life, and everything is an incredible display of alien-ness.
The Order: Fantastic Voyage - Part 4
Much like Proteus Vex, The Order also has a complex narrative. While I've had my issues in keeping up with Kek-W's vision, I still come into each issue hoping this is the one where it all clicks into place. Sadly it's still yet to happen.
What I do understand is that Francis Bacon is a bit of a shit, and the members of The Order are somehow stood in time. How it all fits together is anyone's guess, but it's certainly good to look at.
Fingers crossed for next week...
Kingmaker: Falls The Shadow - Part 4
Kingmaker is something that on paper shouldn't work. It's big on fantasy and big on sci-fi, and the two genres seldom go together well. Thankfully when it comes to Kingmaker this genre mash-up works pretty well.
Crixus and Princess Yarrow are heading into big trouble. While they've dispatched the dastardly Ichar The Wraith King, his soul has wormed its way into the Thorn Duke. Why is this bad? Well, the Thorn Duke is the leader of the alien Thorn who just so happen to be invading the planet.
Ian Edington gives us one end of the genre spectrum to the next as this Game of Thrones plays out. While it sounds confusing everything works well and Leigh Gallagher ties it all together with some brilliant art.
Saphir: Liaisons Dangereuses - Part 1
The last time we saw Inspector Mucha he was drawn into a strange world of different dimensions and homages to British Politicians. Now, the poor Inspector is thrown back into it yet again.
Kek-W is back on writing duties for this one and utilises this opening to reintroduce us to Mucha and Lady Conundrum. There's also the mystery in the catacombs, as well as Fifi and Henri. What's going on? Who knows, but expect more weirdness, and maybe some social satire too...
