Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Prog 2264
Rob reviews 2000 AD Prog 2264...
I'm a bit late to the party this week - blame the day job - but patience is a virtue...or so the saying goes.
Anyway, we're up to Prog 2264 and as such there's more continuations for the current Judge Dredd, The Order, Kingmaker, and Proteus Vex strips. But more importantly, we're bidding au revoir to The Out as Dan Abnett closes out this next chapter in the stunning sci-fi opera.
But first...
Judge Dredd: Working Girl - Part 2
Mona's in the thick of it. She's short on cash and has taken a very risky job. One that's going to end in death, or a lengthy sentence in an Iso Cube - neither is ideal. Now she's soaring through the heights of MegaCity-1, with an H-Wagon in pursuit.
There's a lot of action here as Ken Niemand takes us on an adrenaline-fuelled thrill ride. This one got more twists and turns than a rollercoaster as Dredd chases Mona and her fellow Sky Surfers through the Meg.
The real star to this one is Patrick Goddard who lays each scene out with some superb aerial shots, fancy acrobatics (is it flying? Or falling with style?), and some gorgeous views of the Meg's impressive skyline. Add in Dylan Teague with his unique colour style, and 'Working Girl' is one fine looking strip.
Proteus Vex: Desire Paths - Part 3
After last weeks "attack of the clones", Vex and Navarch are off to see the Scavenger - who may have the answers to the rescued Flesh-Pilots shared memories. However following close behind is the ever-present Imperium, this time in the form of Agent Nandy.
There's a lot of world-building within this one as we see more of the Proteus Vex universe.
Mike Carroll uses the "downtime" of a simple maintenance stop to introduce us to the former Obdurate Empire, as well as the relative calmness of a galactic way station. It's somewhat of a filler episode, but it builds up the story very well.
What makes Proteus Vex so unique is that Carroll along with Jake Lynch and Jim Boswell, makes everything feel mysterious. You've got the somewhat alien nature to the cast, yet underneath is a very grounded science fiction story.
The Order: Fantastic Voyage - Part 3
We take a look into Cassi's past as The Order confuses me even more.
What's it all about? I've got no idea. Dealing with this many characters, all with their backstory is a narrative minefield - and it's one I'm right in the middle of. I can imagine when writing The Order, Kek-W has a giant board littered with character names and their links to each other.
Hopefully, it will all click soon, but I'm afraid it may already be too late.
Kingmaker: Falls The Shadow - Part 3
After his defeat, the spirit of Ichnar the Wraith King has found a new vessel in the form of the Thorn Duke. With Ichnar now pulling the Thorn's strings, things aren't looking too good. Sensing the imminent danger, Lord Tycho attempts to save his own life, and soon hightail his way out of Ichnar's gaze.
Much like Lynch's work in Proteus Vex, Leigh Gallagher's linework gives Kingmaker a very alien feel. There's a clear contrast between locations too, with the sharp purples and blacks of the Thorn. And the more soft and gentle setting of the Nine Kingdoms. Ichar also looks particularly menacing with his somewhat "God-like" glow - complete with a classic "basin" hairstyle!
The Out: Book 2 - Part 14 (Final Part)
After 14-parts we (sadly) say our goodbye to Cyd and her journey through the Out. It's going to be hard to talk about this one without spoilers. So here goes!
It's been one fantastic Voyage so far that's been full of many ups and downs. Throughout there's been a subtle shift to Cyd as she's adjusted to her life being forever changed by her experiences. Of course, this is all well and good, but nibbling away was the main question of "where's it all leading to?". Well, last week this was answered as Dan Abnett brought Cyd's journey full circle and straight back into the arms of the Tankinar.
That's what's been the real beauty behind The Out. Way back we saw this big galactic-wide threat - except we didn't see who - or what - the Tankinar were. Human? Or something else?
Now in this finale, Abnett not only answers these questions but also builds towards the future. Not only for Cyd but for the galaxy too.
Alas, all good things must come to an end. And as ABBA once said..."See that girl, watch that scene, digging the Dancing Queen"
