Comic Book Review - Mighty Morphin #14
Rob reviews Mighty Morphin #14...
Since Zartus and the Eltarians arrived on Earth things have been steadily building towards an explosive climax. This explosion came in two forms. Not only did the Supreme Guardian destroy Zordon - and the Command Center. He's also taken out Promethea, and Lord Zedd's Palace on the Moon.
With the Rangers - and Zedd's minions - on their heels, both groups retreat to relative safety and in doing so begin to gravitate to the current situation. Meanwhile Billy and Alpha-5 attempt to revive Zordon, which involves diving into the formers past experiences.
Mighty Morphin #14 is a bit of a sombre affair. The action is very toned down as we're shown a team at their darkest times. Not only have they lost their leader, but the team is also split between Earth and Safehaven. The main arc in this issue revolves around Billy's search for Zordon, but it's during the parts away from this that the writing shines. I've said it plenty of times before, but Ryan Parrott delivers when it comes to just having the characters taking. Throughout Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers, we've had plenty of instances where characters such as Adam, Aisha, Rocky - and even Trini and Zack have had their moments in the spotlight.
This goes further in this issue as Parrot gives Goldar and Baboo their time in the spotlight. There are plenty of moments that give these two more character than what's been seen before. There's a particular "touching" moment as Rocky speaks to Goldar about why he's never killed the Rangers when he's had plenty of opportunities to do so. While Goldar has always been shown as someone who lives on a belief of traditions and honours, this single conversation cements this fact. We then turn to Baboo as he reasons with Finster and Squat. The former henchman makes a pretty strong argument when it comes to why they followed Rita, and why continue to bow to Zedd. Again, it's nice to see these characters get some development, especially when the series mainly focuses upon the Rangers and their allies.
Billy is the real star of this issue as he attempts to bring Zordon back from his untimely death. This journey involves both Yale and the Blue Emissary as the trio dive into Zordon's memories. This journey not only gives a way to bring Zordon back, but it also dives into his vulnerability, as well as repairing the rift between himself and Billy.
In true Power Rangers fashion, we also get the classic issue ending cliffhanger. While I won't spoil what it is. It gives a glimmer of hope within the darkness.
All in all, Mighty Morphin #14 is another stellar example of why Ryan Parrott is at the helm of the main Power Ranger series. There's plenty here that takes the story away from just being about "Power Rangers". While we do have these action-packed moments, there's a strong showing of the human element of life behind the mask.
