Comic Book Review - Magic #2

Rob reviews Magic #2...

After surviving a coordinated assassination attempts the three Planeswalkers - Kaya, Vraska, and Ral Zarek are still none the wiser as to who would want them dead. When the Mind Sculptor, Jace is then attacked by one of the surviving assassins. The trio realise that Jace may of been the real target...

Magic #2 picks up in the aftermath of the attack on Jace. As Ral Zarek, Kaya and Vraska attempt to come to terms with whats happening, their thrust into yet another attempt on Jace's life. It doesn't get easier for the Mind Sculptor either as he's powerless to defend himself as he attempts to recover from the previous attacks.

Fans of Magic The Gathering will be quite at home with this issue. After the opening action sequences, Jed MacKay introduces a plethora of well known MtG characters to the story. It's an interesting set-up and is one thats MacKay uses to set up the card games various guilds.

In terms of writing, MacKay brings plenty of dialogue to his story. There's a great mix of exposition throughout as we're shown past events and how they're shaping this story. As I mentioned in my review for Magic #1, I'm not familiar with many of the card games lore. However MacKay brings a story that doesn't rely on a heavy amount of knowledge to enjoy.

Ig Guara's art is both stunning and expressive and every cell is full of life and incredible detail. Arianna Consonni does a wonderful job with her colour work. There's some gorgeous shadow work that really imposes just what the characters are feeling. The scene between Kaya and Vraska is a great showcase of this as both Guara and Consonni highlight the Gorgons frustration and menacing glare.

Magic #2 is a great fantasy tale that not only appeals to the MtG community, but fantasy fans too. MacKay, Guara, and Consonni are working wonders with bringing the Planeswalkers and their world to life. And this ones shaping up to be something special.

Rating 8/10
