Comic Book Review - Firefly: Brand New 'Verse #2

Rob reviews Firefly: Brand New 'Verse #2...

Remember last time when I said that Firefly: Brand New 'Verse #1 was steeped in nostalgia? Well, it's more the same this time as well.

Issue #2 picks up where #1 left off. The crew have discovered that their 'salvage' just so happens to be living, they set off to keep the being out of the hands of the Blue Sun. This then causes yet another trip to nostalgia land as Zoe calls on both Simon and Kaylee for help.

It's nice to see Kaylee and Simon back. Writer, Josh Lee Gordon has so far used the right amount of familiarity to not only move the plot forward but also enhance his cast of original characters. This is further helped by the fact that Serenity's new crew are just as diverse and engaging as their TV show brethren. Naturally, Kaylee is the real star of 'Brand New 'Verse #2'. It was great to see 'the heart of Serenity' back in familiar surroundings - yes I may be a bit biased on that.

Anyway, there's also a nice moment where we're given a heartwarming tribute to Wash. Which felt incredibly poignant considering his heroic death in Serenity.

Fabiana Mascolo and Lucia Di Giammarino tread the same water with the artwork. There's a great sense of nostalgia as we're treated to some gorgeous scenes on the now obsolete Serenity. The colours also switch from the older looking to an almost crisp and new, which does wonders to show the differences between the two worlds that make up 'Brand New 'Verse'.

Rating 8/10
