Rob Lake reviews 2000 AD Prog 2217...
It's Wednesday which means I'm back with another journey into the world of 2000 AD. This week we're heading into Prog 2217, which gives us a side of Dredd that no one should ever want to see.
A special shout out goes to Dan Cornwell who's on front cover duties this week for the very first time!
Judge Dredd: Naked City
Kenneth Niemand is back in the Prog this week with a tale that delves into the weird and wacky side of MegaCity-1. Mall Security Chief, Moe Hallam has a peculiar psychic ability - she sees dead...no I mean naked people.
Whilst seeing people naked probably has its plus points, especially being in security. When it comes to Dredd, I'd rather see the Lawman with his clothes on.
It's a silly done-in-one where both Niemand and Dan Cornwell have a bit of fun. Cornwell's art is great throughout and the old fashion use of props to disguise full nudity works great here. Niemand also delivers to us a side of Dredd that no one expected to see and that's what makes this one a great read. It's silly, a little bit bonkers and does great to show that the Big Meg is full of all-sorts.
Durham Red: Served Cold - Part 6
I've said it since the start and I'll say it again - Assault on Precinct 13. More so now that Durham has gotten the other prisoners on the job too! With the gang holed up inside the prison and an army of bad guys outside, it's not looking good for the Vampire S/D agent.
Alec Worley still hasn't delivered the final nail into the proverbials as we still don't know why the big bad wants Red. But, it's still rumbling on with some great action and fantastic art by Ben Wilsher.
Proteus Vex: The Shadow Chancellor - Part 6
Proteus Vex dives into the weirdness this week. The captured Silent is running amok yet again, Vex is injured and a fleet of Citheronian ships are on the way to take Midnight Indicating Shame back home. Naturally, this is something that Midnight doesn't and she pulls out all the stops in making sure that she doesn't return home.
The whole idea of Vex being a flesh-pilot is brought up again as Midnight uses Vex to her advantage. Michael Carroll gives us a bit of character building throughout. The seasoned writer touches upon the weird flashbacks that Vex has been having as well as the weird world that surrounds him.
Sláine: Dragontamer - Part 6
Sláine goes a little political this week as Pat Mills gives us a break from all the dragons. Sláine is freeing a group of prisoners from the gallows that feels like a set up by Emperor Brutus. This of course leads to the rest of the country blaming the Shoggey for the reasons that the country is in the state its in. Sláine takes the brunt of this and so becomes an enemy of the people he's trying to help.
Sounds a bit like the UK at the moment!
Anyway, it wouldn't be Sláine without the violence. Leonardo Manco continues to delight as Sláine and sets about freeing the Shoggy prisoners.
Hershey: The Brutal - Part 6
Hershey continues her plan to reach Edu, as Frank found himself in the semi-finals of the boxing tournament.
The plan is close to falling apart from the ex Chief-Judge as Frank, being the ex-Judge sees a bit of clarity that he's essentially being used by Hershey - much like Smiley, and Dredd beforehand.
Rob Williams continues the build-up as it seems nothing is getting in the way of Hershey and her "quest". Williams tone of writing throughout both The Brutal and The Disease has given Hershey a fantastic "brutal" style that's a far cry from her more measured role of Chief-Judge. As always Simon Fraser's art is on point throughout and he's driving the brutal nature of The Brutal home.
Rating: 8/10
