Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Prog 2226

Image
Rob Lake reviews 2000 AD Prog 2226... Wednesday is upon us yet again. As the UK braces it's self for yet another ease of lockdown restrictions, Tharg is back to take our minds away from it all with another trip through the Thrillverse.  It's more of the same this week. With Dredd , Feral and Foe , Thistlebone , and Visons of Deadworld all continuing. The only difference is that we're joined by another one of Tharg's 3Rillers which sees the return of Mike Collins to the Progs, and more incredible colours from the talented Dylan Teague .  Judge Dredd: A Penitent Man - Part 2 Asher is back in Mega-City 1 from his 20-year stretch on Titan. The former Judge wants to put the past behind him and serve The Meg in anyway he can. Dredd isn't so keen on Asher's plan. But that's just the tip of Dredd's issues. With the SJS warning him away from Asher, does Dredd's paranoia warrant a deeper investigation?  Ken Niemand is really bringing his A-Game ...

Comic Book Review: 2000AD Prog 2224

Image
Rob Lake reviews 2000AD Prog 2224... Cover Star this week comes from John McCrea , who gives us a gorgeous look at Dredd doing what he does best... There's only four strips coming our way this week as the returning Feral & Foe II gets the double-length treatment.  Other than that it's business as normal with more strange goings on in Thistlebone: Poisoned Roots , and the finale of both Who Killed Captain Cookies and Nakka of the S.T.A.R.S. Judge Dredd: Who Killed Captain Cookies - Part 4 This week Ken Niemand and PJ Holden end the latest adventure of everyone's favorite Mega-City 1 vigilante, Noam Chimpsky.  So, Noam's done all the hard work which then leaves Dredd to come and make the bust and do the paperwork. While Who Killed Captain Cookies isn't going to have any wider ramifications, it's been a fun tale neitherless. Much with any Dredd character, Noam Chimpsky brings his fair share of social media criticism. But I for one, feel that the...

Comic Book Preview - The Vigilant Complete

Image
Previewing The Vigilant Complete collection... Simon Furman & Simon Colby's modernisation of The Vigilant holds a special place within my heart. I had just started reviewing both the 2000 AD Progs as well as the Judge Dredd Megazine when the final part to The   Vigilant appeared. I found it to be a highly entertaining story that really captured the essence of this older generation of super-hero. Anyway to cut a long story short, the 2000 AD Twitter account quoted my review (my first ever quote) and I even brought the complete serialised Vigilant issues from Simon Furman himself - signed of course!  Fast-Forward to now and the folk over at 2000 AD and The Treasury of British Comics  are set to release Furman and Colby's three-parter as a complete story. Three-stories that bring together a vast assortment of British Superhero's and hurtles them into the future... The Vigilant opens to Dr Mesmer and Von Hoffman, doing what every super vill...

Comic Book Review - Judge Dredd: End of Days

Image
Rob Lake reviews Judge Dredd: End of Days... Judge Dredd: End of Days is the complete collection of 2000AD's Dredd epic of 2020. This TPB collects the complete 15-episode globe-spanning - End of Days , as well as two epilogues - Carry The Nine & They Shoot Horses Don't They?.  It's classic Dredd as he teams up with a talking horse, a severed head and a character from 2000AD's history. Yes, End of Days has it all... End of Days  has all the hallmarks of classic Dredd. There's plenty of action, crazy moments, the bizarre and lots and lots of twists and turns. It's also helmed by Rob Williams , who isn't a stranger to writing a superb Dredd tale ( Small House, Titan and Control) . The main bulk of the story revolves around Dredd and a team of Judges setting out to stop the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse - Famine, Pestilence, War and Death. What starts as a simple hunt soon turns into an absolute mess of chaos as cancelling the Apocalypse isn...

Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Prog 2222

Image
Rob Lake reviews 2000 AD Prog 2222... There's a slight change to proceedings this week as Sláine is taking a hiatus for a couple of weeks. Word on the streets is that Leonardo Manco is running a little behind with his art duties. And who can blame him? His work on Dragontamer has been nothing short of phenomenal, so if he needs mode time then so be it.  Instead of Sláine , this week we're treated to another Tharg's 3Riller with Nakka of the S.T.A.R.S. Also this week Noam Chimpsky is back in Who Killed Captain Cookies , urban horror stories in Thistlebone,  and the penultimate parts to both Proteus Vex and Durham Red .  Judge Dredd: Who Killed Captain Cookies - Part 2 So Captain Cookies is dead, the Judge's rate it as a low-level crime so who's left to sort it? Yes of course it's down to fan favourite - Noam Chimpsky.  It's a game of Judge Vs. Chimp as Noam's investigation takes him close to the gaze of Judge Dredd. Much like last weeks ...

Comic Book Review - 2000AD Prog 2218

Image
Rob Lake reviews 2000AD Prog 2218... It's Wednesday yet again and the UK is currently suffering from the effects of the 'Beast of the East 2'. With bitterly cold winds, and most of the country under a few feet of snow, it's the perfect time to settle in with some 2000AD delights. Simon Fraser takes the cover artist spotlight this week. With a great shot of Frank and Joe looking a bit worse for wear, things must be getting bad in Hersey: The Brutal . Elsewhere it's all systems normal as Durham Red, Proteus Vex, Sláine and Hershey continue. Joining them this week is a nice done-in-one by Rob Williams and Simon Colby - which naturally kicks Prog 2218 off... Judge Dredd: Health & Happiness We get treated to six-pages of Dredd being in the background this week as Rob Williams takes us into the life of Harry Dump. Harry seems to live quite the good life. He's a physically fit, law-abiding citizen. Harry's only problem is that he lives in Mega-C...

Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Prog 2217

Image
Rob Lake reviews 2000 AD Prog 2217... It's Wednesday which means I'm back with another journey into the world of 2000 AD. This week we're heading into Prog 2217, which gives us a side of Dredd that no one should ever want to see. A special shout out goes to Dan Cornwell who's on front cover duties this week for the very first time! Judge Dredd: Naked City Kenneth Niemand is back in the Prog this week with a tale that delves into the weird and wacky side of MegaCity-1. Mall Security Chief, Moe Hallam has a peculiar psychic ability - she sees dead...no I mean naked people. Whilst seeing people naked probably has its plus points, especially being in security. When it comes to Dredd, I'd rather see the Lawman with his clothes on.  It's a silly done-in-one where both Niemand and Dan Cornwell have a bit of fun. Cornwell's art is great throughout and the old fashion use of props to disguise full nudity works great here. Niemand also delivers to us ...
