Video Game Review - Trepang2

Rob reviews Trepang2 on PC…

Trepang2, developed by Trepang Studios, is a first-person shooter video game that offers an exhilarating and immersive gaming experience. As a spiritual successor to the cult classic F.E.A.R. series, Trepang2 combines intense action, supernatural elements, and a gripping narrative to create a unique and captivating gameplay experience.

Trepang2 manages to weave a compelling narrative through its atmospheric world. Taking on the role of an enigmatic protagonist, players are thrust into a world where they must confront both human and supernatural threats. The game's story unfolds through cryptic messages, audio logs, and environmental storytelling, immersing players in its enigmatic lore.

The atmosphere throughout is tense and foreboding. The use of lighting and sound design is masterful, creating an unsettling ambiance that keeps players on edge throughout their journey. The combination of supernatural elements and a mysterious organization adds layers of intrigue to the plot, making every twist and turn in the narrative all the more captivating.

Trepang2's gameplay is a masterclass in the FPS genre. At its core, the game offers a satisfying and visceral combat experience. The gunplay is incredibly tight and responsive, making every shot count. The game features an arsenal of weapons, from traditional firearms to experimental tech, each with its own unique feel and utility.

From the moment you step into the shoes of the protagonist, you are thrust into a world of high-octane combat and supernatural mysteries. The game's mechanics are reminiscent of classic FPS titles, with a focus on fast-paced gunplay, tactical maneuvering, and smart enemy AI. The standout feature of the gameplay is the "Slo-Mo" mechanic. This ability allows players to slow down time at will, adding a strategic layer to the action. It's not just a gimmick; it's a tool that can be used creatively. Whether you're dodging a hail of bullets or lining up the perfect headshot.

Levels all feature multiple paths and vantage points, which gives you plenty of freedom to approach situations as you see fit. This tactical approach extends to the enemy as the games AI is smart and adaptive. Enemies will coordinate and adapt their tactics, keeping you on your toes. Each environment is also meticulously crafted, providing players with a variety of settings, from underground facilities to sprawling cityscapes.

Beyond the intense bullet-filled firefights, Trepang2 rewards exploration. Levels are filled with hidden secrets, collectibles, and optional objectives. These not only provide a sense of accomplishment but also contribute to the game's lore, encouraging players to dive deeper into its world. The game features challenging boss battles that are epic in scale and require both skill and strategy to overcome. These encounters are a true test of your abilities and provide some of the most memorable moments in the game.

Visually and the game is a testament to modern game development. The graphics are stunning, with detailed character models, realistic physics, and dynamic environments. The attention to detail is evident in every frame, enhancing the immersion factor. The audio design is also equally impressive. The soundtrack enhances the mood, shifting seamlessly between moments of calm and intense action. Sound effects are crisp and realistic, adding to the immersion. The voice acting is top-notch, bringing the characters to life and helping to convey the game's intricate plot.

While the single-player campaign is the star of the show, the game also offers a multiplayer mode. Players can engage in fast-paced matches against others, utilizing the same mechanics and level design that make the single-player experience so engaging. This adds a layer of replayability to the game, as you can then test your skills against human opponents. And if you’re like me - it’ll be a very humbling experience.

Overall, Trepang2 is a finely crafted blend of tight gunplay, a satisfying Slo-Mo mechanic, and clever level design. It challenges players to think on their feet, rewards exploration, and delivers memorable boss battles to boot It's a game that will keep you engaged from start to finish and stands as a testament to how F.E.A.R. (and it’s sequels) challenged the FPS norms. For both fans of the genre and the aforementioned F.E.A.R., Trepang2 is worthy of your time!

Rating: 9/10

Crafting the Apocalypse with Kek-W

Rob takes a trip to Deadworld with 2000 AD writer Kek-W… ‘ The Fall of Deadworld: Redemption ’ made its return to the 2000 AD Prog this week. While the battle for Sector 13 and the wider city rumbles on, I spoke to curator of chaos, Kek-W about Deadworld past, and more importantly, its future. Looking back, what first attracted you to writing what’s essentially the Dark Judges origin  story? KW - Well, the first four DREAMS OF DEADWORLD stories that Dave and I did were well received,  so rather than just doing more of the same - stories that showcased the individual Dark Judges - I pitched the idea of telling the back-story of how the four of them destroyed an entire world. How did that happen, how might it work? I figured it was a landscape ripe with dramatic story-telling potential. 'Ripe' being the operative word! (laughs) I also thought it might be interesting to focus in on a ordinary family, to see and experience the collapse of civilization  from their point of view and

Rogue Trooper - Blighty Valley TPB Announced

Garth Ennis takes a journey back to NU-Earth… Today, August 29th marks a pivotal moment in 2000 AD history. Back in 1981, Gerry Findley-Day and Dave Gibbons introduced GI Rogue Trooper. As a Genetic Infantry, Rogue is bred to survive the harsh war-torn environment of NU-Earth. Soon betrayed by his superiors, Rogue is forced to seek his revenge while traversing the dangerous battlefield that NU-Earth has become. With the bio-chip personalities of his former comrades as his only allies, Rogue spent the next few years tracking down the Traitor General.  Fast-forward to today, and 2000 AD have announced that ‘Blighty Valley’  , Garth Ennis and Patrick Goddard’s recent foray into NU-Earth is being released in a trade paperback collection. ‘ Blighty Valley is Rogue’s first regular appearance in 2000 AD in a number of years – a thirteen-part story set at 'Night’s Horizon', the annual event where Nu Earth’s orbit carries it closest to a nearby black hole. The Norts call it Zvartchvinte

Comic Book Review - The Best of 2000 AD Vol. 3

Rob reviews The Best of 2000 AD Vol.3… The ‘Ultimate Mix-Tape’ of 2000 AD’s greatest hits is back for its third volume. Packed with an array of specially curated strips,  The Best of 2000 AD series does its very best in introducing you to the world of Tharg, and his Thrillverse. Much like its predecessors, this volume offers up an enticing mixture of strips and feature that draw across all corners of the wider 2000 AD mythos. While we do get a couple of standard trips to Mega-City 1 with Judge Dredd, series Editor Owen Johnson shows us the anthologies more “Tales of the Unexplained” side as things get a little bizarre.  Personally, this third volume has been my favourite out of the series so far. Not only does it feature a Judge Dredd written by Michael Carroll, we also have the debut of Ian Edginton  and D’Israeli. While you’d think that Johnson would of opted to include the duo’s phenomenal Scarlet Traces, he’s instead swapped the Earth/Mars war for the Atlantic Ocean, as we get a mu
