Comic Book Review - X Deaths Of Wolverine #3

Rob reviews X Deaths Of Wolverine #3...

The X Deaths/X Lives Of Wolverine has been a pretty gripping tale so far. Its duel narrative has been a rip-roaring ride through Wolverine's past and Krakoa's future. Whilst Logan continues to grapple with Omega Red in the past, the X Family are dealing with their own "Cyber" Wolverine in the present. But is he from the future?

This week sees the Wolverine family called up to tackle whatever it is that's imitating dear old Dad. As this form of Wolverine tears and claws his way through everyone that stands in his way, Xavier calls upon the extended Wolverine family to help. Having Gabby, Laura, and Draken on the side gives everything a deeper meaning. Not only do we see them deal with something that's imitating their Wolverine, but the trio is arguably Xavier's best shot at stopping the threat.

Of course, things aren't even simple and it soon turns out that this Wolverine is in fact from the future. What is it with Mutant kind and their dark future storylines? Seemingly taking inspiration from the classic 'Days Of Future Past' storyline, Benjamin Percy mixes things up by having Moira McTaggart as a Mutankinds destroyer. Is it going to be that simple? Well, right now it certainly seems that way. But whatever Percy has up his sleeve for Moria, she's now dealing with Mystique and clan Wolverine.

Percy continues to write this series with a great understanding of its core cast. The "banter" between Laura and Gabby on Krakoa is very "Wolverine" and certainly ties into the family's heritage. Draken is also similarly portrayed. He's still got the Daddy issues and sees killing Omega Wolverine as a means of closure. Moira's journey is also developed more as we start to see how - and even why - she causes Omega Wolverines' future to happen. Percy also starts to hint that Moria's hostage may even be the actual cause of this future and that Moria herself is a pawn in a much larger game.

In true Wolverine fashion, there's a lot of action in this issue. The fight between Omega Wolverine, Draken, Gabby, and Laura take a lot of page space, but it's a bloody spectacle of what Wolverine does best. Federico Vicentini does a wonderful job in capturing every inch of this fight, with plenty of different angles and viewpoints. There's a lot of detail here too as Vicentini shows how brutal a fight with claws can be.

X Deaths Of Wolverine #3 continues to deliver its excellent narrative with the inclusion of a high-octane fight scene. Not only this but Benjamin Percy is starting to hint at the deeper narrative too. However, with only 4-weeks of storytelling left (according to the "Coming Soon..." page), will we get a satisfactory ending to the X Lives/Deaths saga?

Rating 8/10
