Comic Book Review - Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word #3

Rob reviews Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word #3...

Ever since her daughter's death, Teresa has been on a mission of revenge. This has subsequently seen a trail of blood seep throughout Night City as she heads closer to the truth. Now as we reach the penultimate part of You Have My Word, Bartosz Sztybor adds another twist to this tale.

So far You Have My Word has been a pretty brutal tour through the Night City underworld. We've seen Teresa maim and slaughter her way through this "scum" as she attempts to find out who ordered the hit on her daughter. While initially the finger of blame was laid on Alina - Oriona's partner and Miltech mole. However come the end of this issue, we now know who set it all up, and a little insight into why.

Issue #3 sees this journey continue as Teresa comes perilously close to becoming one of Night Cities victims herself. Ever since Teresa took over as the primary character there's been a sense of mystery around who she is. We've seen her go from a quiet life away from Night City, to then becoming swallowed up by it. It's never been a secret that she's quite a badass, yet we've never delved into why a badass granny is hiding in the middle of nowhere. This lingering question sort of gets answered within this issue as a gang boss, El Sombroni let's slip.

Turns out that Teresa is somehow tied into the Valentinos gang. Back in the past El Sombroni lost his sister in an attack and has somehow managed to implicit Teresa with her murder. While we've seen Two-Toes refer to Teresa as Maria, El Sombroni knows her as a different name -  "La Muerte". It's from here that things take a more drastic turn. With her constant thirst for revenge, Teresa is held up in the "No Tell Motel" awaiting the arrival of Oriona's past allies.
Things here take a more drastic turn as Two-Toes seemingly rats out Teresa to Cormac, and as such the gang heads off to war.

There are a lot of questions that surround this issue as the central theme of trust comes back into play. On the surface Two-Toes, betrayal seems pretty logical, yet by reading in between the lines you could be mistaken for it being a work to get Cormac. Either way, what follows is a bloody shoot up as Cormac and his group descend onto room 21.

Jesús Hervás and Giulia Brusco capture the essence of Night City incredibly well. There's a great mixture of designs and colour as we switch from the neon-soaked highways to the darker, seedier element that sits just below. Character design is also exceptional. Each character is highly detailed with Hervás paying extra attention to their cybernetics. Each rivet, groove, and facial line looks the part and give everything that distinct Cyberpunk 2077 feel. Brusco also adds to this with a gorgeous mixture of warm and cool tones which helps highlight the change of perspective between scenes.

Bartosz Sztybor continues to work his magic as the narrative takes a darker tone (could it get any darker?). Come to this issues conclusion and we're only scratching the surface of a story that could escalate into another series - or even the video game itself. Sztybor's script comes at quite a varied pace which allows for a lot of dramatic character dialogue, to then switch to an upbeat tempo when the bullets (and limbs) start flying.

I will just add that once you've read CP2077: You Have My Word #3 go back and read issue #1. You'll be amazed at some of the little details that foreshadow this issues events!

Rating 9/10
