Comic Book Review - Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word #2

Rob reviews Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word #2...

It has been a while since our first visit to Night City. The sprawling neon city had claimed its latest victim - Oriona.
Now her Mother - Teresa - is heading back to Night City after a 30-year absence and is ready to make whoever killed her Daughter pay...

Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word #2 starts a few hours after the ending of issue #1. Alina has informed Teresa and Aarno of Oriona's death. The official cause was a shot to the head by a rogue MiliTec agent. However, Teresa thinks differently. Aarno laminates over Oriona's decision not to follow him into working for MiliTech, which was probably just as bad as the gang that his late daughter was working for.

Partnering with Alina, Teresa heads back tonight City looking for answers. And writer Bartoz Sztybor makes it clear that not everyone is going to make it out alive. The duo's journey into Night City sets the tempo to the rest of the issue as Teresa steals a car to cover their tracks, and just stops short of murdering a potentially innocent family.

The first target on Teresa's list is Kyle. Kyle, who happens to be a pretty well "upgraded" makes short work of Teresa, and severely wounds her in the insuring fight.
On death's door, Teresa directs Alina to a figure of her past who'll patch her up. Whilst here we learn a little more of Teresa's shady past with Night City, and in the process, the old lady swaps her knife for a really big gun!

While issue #1 focused more on Oriona, this second issue introduces Teresa with a great degree of characterisation. The way that Sztybor uses her age to highlight just how much the work has changed not only builds upon Teresa, but also the character of the world around her. By the issue end, Teresa has fully embraced the "new" ways in which to survive this world. She's not only encountered the near-indestructible Kyle, but she's also now got her cybernetics and a very large gun.

You Have My Word feels very much like an old fashioned revenge tale - which it most certainly is. But with the characters, I can't help but think it's going to turn into something far more. We know from the conversations that Teresa hasn't been to Night City in nearly 30-years, and that she's also died. Just what's gone on is anyone's guess right now. But Sztybor is teasing what's to come.

All in all, Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word #2 is a great second issue. The switch in viewpoints from Oriona to Teresa naturally pushes the story forward. Teresa feels very much like Terminators Sarah Connor, she's got a shady past but has the experience to survive in an uncertain world. Jesus Hervas and Giulia Brusco bring Night City to life in a great way, which makes the city just as much of a character as everyone else.

I already can't wait until October 27th for issue #3!

Rating 9/10
