Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Prog 2233 [Regened]
Rob reviews 2000 AD Prog 2233 [Regened]...
Tharg hands over the reins to Joko-Jargo this week as the all-ages special Regened returns. Inside is five brand new tales that will appeal to the younger reader, and have a little extra for the more mature of us...
With all-new Cadet Dredd, Pandora Perfect, Anderson, PSI-Division, and Department K inside, let's strap in and see what it's all about...
Cadet Dredd: Lawbreaker
Kicking off Prog 2233 is another Cadet Dredd that feels like it's straight out of the standard Progs. T.V. duo Ant & Dec come into the firing line as another Block War rocks the streets of MegaCity-1. The violence between Donnelly and McPartlin Blocks happens so often its become routine, and as such the Justice Department uses it as a training exercise for its cadets.
Dredd and Rico find themselves on the front line, and it isn't too long before they up to their necks in it. Queue a disciplinary hearing, and we've got aside to the "brothers" that's not been touched upon before.
Friend of the blog, Liam Johnson makes his triumphant return to the Progs and teams up with Jake Lynch to bring 'Lawbreakers' to life. This one feels very much like the 2000 AD tales of old and is one that will most definitely appeal to both young and old readers. Now we need Jonhson to write more Dredd (no, I'm not biased!)
Future Shocks: Space Expectations
Are we alone in the galaxy? It's one question that humanity has asked and is still yet to receive an answer to. For the last 50 years, one poor robot has done humanities searching for them. Long since forgotten by his controllers back on Earth, this hapless robot is doomed to spend its life wandering the solar system. But what happens when it discovers another life form?
Colin Harvey and Tom Newell bring us a great look into humanities the first contact with extraterrestrial life, with a great Future Shocks twist.
Anderson, PSI-Division: Deep Burn
Anderson is back with a somewhat continuation from her previous Regened outings. After discovering a string of incidents that points to an alien incursion on Earth, Anderson heads to space - with a Cadet in tow.
Fresh from his run with Marvel's Star Wars: The High Republic, writer Cavan Scott brings this Anderson story to a somewhat satisfying conclusion. Where 'Deep Burn' on its own is a great story, it doesn't quite match the build-up that's been happening over the last few Regened Progs. However, we do see Anderson in action, which is never a bad thing.
Pandora Perfect: Night of the Guffwarbler
Everyone's favourite Mary Poppins-alike with an oh-so dark twist is back. This time the master thief and her faithful Droid sidekick, Gort arrive at the home of Sir Dennis Allanborough.
It's all a bit of silly fun as Pandora and Gort attempt to steal the fabled Guffwarbler from Sir Dennis. Que a lot of messing about and a fair few mishaps, and you've got a great silly crime caper.
Roger Langridge and Brett Parson have created something special with Pandora perfect and it's a "perfect" addition to the all-ages takeover.
Department K: Stranded
The first Department K story introduced us to a weirder side of the Justice Department. Department K is the side of Tek-Div that deals with all the extra-dimensional threats and anomalies. It sounds very 'Doctor Who', albeit with a side order of Dredd.
Judge Kirby, Cadet Afua, Judge Estabon, and Judge Blackcurrant are stuck dimension-hopping due to a broken teleporter. The groups latest destination has found them in a spot of bother with the locals and as such, they're in the company of Supreme Empress Crellic the Divine.
It's a great story that sees the gang finally escape from their troubles to land back in the embrace of MegaCity-1. Much like the Anderson tale beforehand. Whilst it feels a little rushed in its conclusion, it's still a fun jaunt into the unknown.
And also serves as Department K's introduction to next week's Prog 2234...
Rating 8/10
