One year after Starlight and the Nihil stand victorious… A lot has changed in the Star Was universe since we last saw the Jedi of Starlight Beacon. Since the Nihil’s attack on the Republics crowning jewel, the terrorist network has taken over the Outer Rim. Not only have they set up an ominous Occlusion Zone that blocks any travel into the Rim, there’s also the Nameless to contend with too. And with the Namelss being the one thing to strip a Jedi of the Force, well things aren’t too good.  Kicking off the third phase of the High Republic, Cavan Scott uses this first issue to reconnect us with Keeve Trennis to then delve deeper into her psyche. Still reeling from the effects of her undercover mission and the failure to save Starlight Beacon, Keeve is a shadow of her former self. She’s haunted by the thoughts of her former masters death at the hands of the Nameless, and even her solitude in the Force forces her to relive Sskeer’s apparent death. The past soon comes back to the presen...

Comic Book Review - Star Wars: The High Republic #13

Rob reviews Star Wars: The High Republic #13... The High Republic #13 ushers the Jedi of Starlight Beacon into the twilight of the first arc's closing segments. To say it's been a wild thrill ride is an absolute understatement. The whole High Republic project has so far documented the gallant Jedi in their struggles against a foe that doesn't know defeat - the Nihil. We've seen the Jedi suffer loss after a loss as the Nihil utilises quite a brutal way of combat to the Outer Rim.  Every time the Jedi seem to catch a break, there's something there to send them crashing back down again. Cavan Scott has been steadily building to what happens in this issue for a while. And its result could be something we've seen before on the big screen... Issue #13 sees the relatively small strike force of Avar Kriss, Keeve Trennis, and Sskeer in their mission to raid the Great Hall of the Nihil. They plan to capture Lourna Dee - the supposed Eye of the Storm. However ...

Rob reviews Star Wars: The High Republic - Trail of Shadows #2... Star Wars meets The Wire as Trail of Shadows sets off on its journey. Previously we were introduced to duel protagonists Emerick Caphtor and Sian Holt. Two very different characters who unknowingly are after the same answers. However one is a high-ranking Jedi, and the other is a high-end private investigator.  Continuing from the last issue both Caphtor and Holt are summoned by Chancellor Soh to review their unknowingly connected investigations. It's soon made clear to the two characters that they are after the same offender and as such Soh tasks the two investigators to work together. After a bit of reluctance, both Caphtor and Holt head off to the planet Vorzyd in search of   'The Gambler's Paradise'. Soh informs the duo that a member of the Nihil is there and is attempting to sell the weapon on the black market.  During the voyage, there's plenty of characterisation as both char...

Comic Book Review - Star Wars: The High Republic #6

Rob reviews Star Wars: The High Republic #6... Marvel's High Republic series keeps going from strength to strength. Throughout the last six issues writer Cavan Scott has given us a stellar story that's not only slowly ramping up its tension - there's also no sight or mention of those pesky Sith.  That's what makes  Star Wars: The High Republic a compelling read. Its story doesn't rely on the events of the films, and as such it gives Scott a far grander scope to tell his story. Over the last few issues, we've seen the Jedi's war with the plant-like Drengir go from bad to worse. Not only did the Drengir manage to attack the Jedi where they're most powerful - The Starlight Beacon. The resulting Jedi offensive at Sedri Minor also resulted in a somewhat muted victory. As such leaving the Drengir unchecked would spell certain doom for both the Outer Rim, but also the Republic too. The last issue saw the Jedi form an uneasy alliance wi...

Rob reviews Star Wars: The High Republic #5... An uneasy alliance, a new threat, and Master Sskeer's secret is finally revealed...It's just another day at the office for the Jedi!  Set 200 years before the events of 'The Skywalker Saga' , Star Wars: The High Republic doesn't need to rely on too much-established lore to tell its story. And as such we're able to explore a more expanded story within this far away galaxy. So far The High Republic has seen the Republic expand its influence into The Outer Rim - a lawless territory that falls under the jurisdiction of the Hutt clans and their criminal enterprises.  Naturally, the Hutt's don't take too kindly to the Republic (and the Jedi) meddling with their business and an uneasy tension between the two sides has been simmering away in the background. However, the discovery of the Drengir on Sedri Minor has forced both sides into an uneasy alliance. And so writer Cavan Scott gives us another mast...
