Re:Read Episode #3 - V For Vendetta

Image
V For Vendetta, a comic that inspired a hacker group, and became a manual to injustice and rebellion… For those of you who are not familiar,  V For Vendetta  is a 1980s comic book that was brought to life by  Alan Moore  and  David Lloyd.  Across the 10-part series,  Moore  tells the story of V; an enigmatic and mysterious antagonist, who’s sole purpose was to bring down the totalitarian government that’s currently governing the stories version of Britain. While the story can be seen as a simple story of good vs evil, it’s so much more. Just under the surface and you have a story that’s full of social injustice, elitism, freedom, the rights of people to simply live their lives, and so much more. It’s also a story who’s themes are becoming ever more realised as we head into our own future. With media bias, and government propaganda dictating how we live our lives, we’re closer now to Alan Moore’s dystopia than we were back when the enigmatic V made...

Comic Book Review - Superman: Lost #1

Image
Rob reviews Superman: Lost #1... Superman: Lost   offers an interesting idea for Lois and Clark. What happens if Superman finds himself separated from everything - and everyone - he has knows for decades? But what about if these years only lasted mere moments for those he left behind? How would Superman cope? And what would cause The Man of Steel to lose all this time? Well, that's what Christopher Preist , Carlo Pagulayan , and Jeromy Cox set to answer as they send Supes far into space.  With the whole mini-series set to take place over ten issues, this opening provides the set-up. Not only does this issue serve to show how Superman ended up being lost in space, but it also shows the effect that the last twenty years have had on his mental health. What already makes this series a must-read is how Preist deals with this change. For Bruce Wayne and Lois, he physically looks no different, yet inside he's had a troubling time in getting home.  Regardless of wha...

DC set to expand the White Knight universe

Image
Enter Batman: What Knight Presents: Generation Joker and World’s Finest: White Knight.. The release this week of Batman: Beyond the White Knight #8 marks the finale to the current arc of Sean Murphy 's "What-If". Not content with letting this particular iteration of Gotham City rest, DC have cooked up two new titles: Batman: What Knight Presents: Generation Joker and World’s Finest: White Knight. First up is Generation Joker , written by Katana Collins and Clay McCormack  (from a story originally by  Sean Murphy) , with art by Mirka Andolfo. Generation Joker  picks up straight  after Beyond the White Knight and sees the kids of Jack Napier and Harley Quinn set out on a road trip with a mission to bring their father back to life.  'When the rebellious twins run away in a stolen Batmobile, only Joker Jack Napier’s quickly fading hologram has any hope of getting them home safely and keeping them out of the family business. But a life of crime isn’t t...

Comic Book Review - Suicide Squad: Blaze #2

Image
Rob reviews Suicide Squad: Blaze #2... Suicide Squad: Blaze has gotten off to a fantastic start. Si Spurrier has given us a version of Task Force X who well and truly live up to their super villain credentials. Not only this, but we've got a great pov subject in Van Zandt, and a supervillain whose powers seem even greater than that of the Man of Steel himself!  And that's exactly where Suicide Squad: Blaze #2 begins... After the squad's defeat in the last issue, Amanda Waller has called for help from the big man himself; Superman. While distrustful of Waller's methods, the Man of Steel heads off to confront the super-powered serial killer. However, what he finds is something that makes mincemeat out of him. So, if this threat can take out the world's strongest superhero, what chance do a group of suped-up prisoners, Harley Quinn, King Shark, Peacemaker, and Captain Boomerang have?  The answer? Well, you'll have to read Suicide Squad: Blaze to fin...

Comic Book Review - Batman: Beyond The White Knight

Image
Rob reviews Batman: Beyond The White Knight... Taking place 10-years after the events seen within  Batman: Curse of the White Knight, writer Sean Murphy brings us a version of Bruce Wayne - and Gotham City - that's very alien to the one we already know. Now known as "Neo-Gotham", Derek Powers has utilised the Wayne Families fortune - and Bat-Tech - to turn the once metropolis into a police state. With Bruce Wayne currently in prison, Batman is now a symbol of Powers' totalitarian regime. Neo-Gotham needs someone to give it hope. But is it Bruce Wayne or could it be Terry McGinnis?  Batman: Beyond The White Knight sets off on its journey in a blockbuster fashion. We join Terry McGinnis as he's led into the ruins of Wayne Manor in search of the one Batman suit Bruce was too scared to use. Naturally, this turns out to be the Batman Beyond suit, and as such McGinnis unwittingly uses powers to effortlessly dispatch the G.T.O. team sent in to investigate hi...

Comic Book Review - Suicide Squad: Blaze #1

Image
Rob reviews Suicide Squad: Blaze #1... Long-time readers of Geek Culture Reviews will know, I normally shy away from comics when it comes to DC . Aside from having a slight interest in Batman, reading a DC comic hasn't interested me - and I've not got a valid reason as to why. Thankfully this all changed as I discovered DC 's " Black Label ". What the Black Label does is that it takes the normally vibrant DC worlds and adds a more adult twist to them. And when it comes to the Suicide Squad , the format works incredibly well.  Considering that Task Force X is made up of "supervillains" and other anarchists, the more adult form of storytelling works incredibly well. What we get with Blaze #1  is a comic that doesn't pull its punches (it doesn't need to), and one that also manages to be a thoroughly entertaining read from cover to cover.  Written by Si Spurrier , Suicide Squad: Blaze sees Amanda Waller assemble Task Force ...

Comic Book Review - Batman: One Dark Knight #1

Image
Rob reviews Batman: One Dark Knight #1... The Legend of the Dark Knight is one steeped with a lot of history. Many heavyweight writers and artists have stamped their mark on Bruce Wayne's life throughout the years - some good - some bad. Stepping up to the proverbial plate this time is veteran comic book artist, Jock. However, not content with just producing another round of stellar art, he   is also penning this DC   Black Label  too.  One Dark Knight presents itself as a typical Batman tale. There's a new addition to the "rogues gallery" in the form of E.M.P., and Batman just so happens to be helping the GCPD transport him through Gotham. However, things don't go to plan and in living up to his name, E.M.P. knocks out everything electrical within Gotham City. With Batman's arsenal also affected by the blackout, the Dark Knight has to rely on his prowess to not only survive the long night but also get E.M.P. safely from Arkham Asylum to Blackgate ...

Comic Book Review - Suicide Squad: Get Joker #1

Image
Rob reviews Suicide Squad: Get Joker #1... I'm not going to lie, I'm not a huge fan of DC. Sure I've got the odd Batman, Superman, and Green Lantern graphic novel. But aside from these, I've never been interested. DC though are currently in full "let's milk The Suicide Squad" mode and as such have brought out  Suicide Squad: Get Joker. The same week as the movie..coincidence? I think not.  Suicide Squad: Get Joker is the latest release from DC's Black Label. This time around writer Brian Azzarello and artist Alex Maleev bring the Squad into a direct conflict with Joker. Why? Well, Jason Todd aka The Red Hood is leading the team, and plastering Joker in anything is guaranteed to sell.  Of course, add Brian Azzarello to the mix and DC may have just another Killing Joke on their hands.  Now before I get into the story. Before the books launch it garnered a bit of controversy with the revelation that one of the characters claims to have been p...

Comic Book Review - Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #6

Image
Rob reviews  Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #6... Considering that Fortnite tells the majority of its lore through its many seasons. These last few issues of Batman/Fortnite have delivered more stories than 15 seasons of in-game content.  Whilst Epic Games may well be playing the long game, DC have gotten straight to the point - even if it doesn't technically coincide with what's happening currently in the game. Last time out we saw Deathstroke not only revealed as a traitor to the team. The mercenary was also the cause of Fishstick's demise. With Deathstroke subsequently sabotaging the Zero Point it falls to desperate measures as Batman and Catwoman re-enter the nonstop battlefield that is Fortnite island. Why? Well, it turns out that none other than Harley Quinn may hold the key to get the Bat and Cat-back to Gotham.  This crossover has been quite a ride. From Batman investigation into the mechanics of the island, to what's outside the loop. E...
