Comic Book Review - Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #6

Rob reviews Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #6...

Considering that Fortnite tells the majority of its lore through its many seasons. These last few issues of Batman/Fortnite have delivered more stories than 15 seasons of in-game content.

Whilst Epic Games may well be playing the long game, DC have gotten straight to the point - even if it doesn't technically coincide with what's happening currently in the game.

Last time out we saw Deathstroke not only revealed as a traitor to the team. The mercenary was also the cause of Fishstick's demise. With Deathstroke subsequently sabotaging the Zero Point it falls to desperate measures as Batman and Catwoman re-enter the nonstop battlefield that is Fortnite island. Why? Well, it turns out that none other than Harley Quinn may hold the key to get the Bat and Cat-back to Gotham.

This crossover has been quite a ride. From Batman investigation into the mechanics of the island, to what's outside the loop. Everything has opened the lore of Fortnite up to far more interpretation. In some way, Christos Gage has utilised this crossover to tie up loose ends within the game's lore and set up something sinister in the future.

Having Harley Quinn being the linchpin that tied Batman and Catwoman to getting home was a nice touch. Even with their shattered memories both the Bat and Cat knew that Quinn was both from their world - and far from sane. I do wish that Gage had explored Harvey's time on the island a little more. Especially when she revealed that she wanted to stay in the loop as the others are just as crazy as she is.

It's also been interesting to see the relationship between Batman and Catwoman develop yet again. Seeing the two go from enemies in issue 1 to something close to lovers in this closing issue has been a great side story. But as the Batman Who Laughs puts it in the final moments "we needed the emotional engine to drive him".

While this closing issue somewhat calls time on Batman's dealings with the Fortnite realm, we do see that wider ramifications are now being set in motion. The inclusion of the Batman Who Laughs continues the multiverse style of storytelling that's become synonymous with Fortnite. Whilst Lex Luthor could tie into Superman's inclusion within the game later on this current season.
What's more interesting is the final moment that introduces Doctor Slone to the DC Universe. With the character being integral to the current Fortnite season (which includes an alien invasion) It's going to be interesting to see where the whole story is going.

Overall Batman/Fortnite - Zero Point has been a fantastic read. While I was initially sceptical as to how both DC and Epic Games would pull it off yet they have done spectacularly. Gage has woven a great standalone Batman story into the intricate workings of the Fortnite universe. Fans of the Fortnite lore are going to have a field day unpacking everything from this crossover. However, I can't wait to see how it all ties together.

Rating 10/10
