Novel Review - The Honeymoon
Ellie reviews The Honeymoon…
A honeymoon in Bali soon turns deadly as Kate Gray turns what should be one of the happiest times of your life turns into a rollercoaster of secrets and cover ups.
Erin and Jamie are a newly married couple enjoying their honeymoon. It isn’t long until Erin meets Sophia, who is also on her own honeymoon, along with her husband Mark. Both Erin and Sophia get chatting around the pool while Jamie is sleeping and Mark is at a market. As both couples are on the last day of their honeymoon, Erin asks if Sophia and Mark would like to join herself and Jamie for a meal at the popular restaurant, the Blue Fin. Without a second thought for Jamie’s plans, Sophia calls ahead and adds the two to their reservation. The meal starts off pleasantly, but then Erin accidently spills a drink on to one of the of the other diners causing some tension which ends with Sofia and Mark leaving the restaurant. Embarrassed by the ordeal Erin and Jamie also leave however they don’t go straight back to the hotel. Instead Jamie leads her to a quiet spot on the cliffs as a storm is about to hit and he wants to take in the view. While on the stone platform one thing leads to another and Erin and Jamie are swept up in the heat of the moment.
Not before long Jamie notices they are being watched by a man and realises he has recorded them in the throws of passion - and just like that the last night turns to disaster. Once back in the UK Sophia is desperate to find out what happened after they left Jamie and Erin and soon news hits about a body being found at the bottom of the stone steps. With the body being happening to be close to the restaurant she starts to do some digging on the couple and soon sees there’s a few skeletons in the couples closet. It’s not long before both couples are entwined in a real mystery as each of them have their own secrets - some bigger than others.
There are four main characters to the book. Jamie has his own security buisness. Erin used to work for Red Bees which is a youth facility for troubled teenagers. Sophia is a journalist looking forward to starting at a new paper. Mark is a mortgage advisor. I really like the characters they feel relatable and just want to get on by working hard. Jamie and Erin have recently purchased a new house in quiet area and are looking to do various rennovations to their home. As the book goes on you realise you can't trust any of the characters and I really didn't expect the person who turned out to be the bad guy was the bad guy.
The book is written from the point of view of the characters mostly Erin and Sophia and it works really well. Just as you think you have worked out who the bad guy is a twist is thrown in. I can honestly say I was obssessed with the book from the start its addictive and an easy read with twists and turns right up until the last chapter. The minute I had chance to relax it was straight to the book. The amount of twists and turns had me addicted from start to finish. Its been a while since i've had a book thats kept me wanting to read for hours. I couldn't wait to find a quiet moment to spend a couple of hours reading.
Kate Gray has written us a fantastic thriller and I really can’t wait to see what she has for us next because this one was fantastic. The whole book was a great page turner and it’s been an absolute joy to read. It’s also one of them books that I can’t wait to read again, and I’ll definitely be buying a copy once it’s released in July.
The Honeymoon is Kate Gray's debut psychological thriller and it really doesn't disappoint. This should be top of your list for the summer.
Rating: 10/10
