Video Game Reivew - The Chase: Ultimate Edition

Ellie receives The Chase: Ultimate Edition on Nintendo Switch...

The long-running hit game show has come to the Nintendo Switch thanks to Barnstorm. But, you clever enough to take on the Chaser?

We've all played along at home screaming the answers to the questions and telling the players not to take the high offer as though they can hear us. But now - thanks to Barnstorm - we can play the television show on the Nintendo Switch.

When you first start the game you are given three options VS Mode, Play and Statistics. VS Mode you can pick to play with up to 3 other players so 4 or going alone. VS Mode gives you the option to play as The Chaser so it's better with other players. You can also play as a solo player, which means you'll play against yourself as both contestant and The Chaser. Play Mode allows you to choose between Easy, Medium or Hard questions and can be played with up to four other players. This model also sees your team take on an A.I. Chaser based on those seen on the television show. Statistics is self-explanatory and is where you can view your stats, such as wins and the cash amount.

Both game modes come with the choice of question categories such as General, TV & Film, Music, and Sport. Each category has a wide range of questions to answer. There are over 4,500 questions featured within the game, so there's s a good amount before you'll start to see them repeated.

The gameplay follows the same loop as the televised show. You'll start at the Cash Builder, which sees you answer some quick-fire questions to see how much money you'll pay. This then leads on to the game selecting your opponent Chaser, to then having them against you in the forthcoming chase. After this, any surviving teammates will then go through another cash builder style round in the hope of answering enough questions to ultimately outrun the Chaser.

As The Chase: Ultimate Edition is a licenced game it does feature the Chasers as they appear on the show - complete with their many signature facial expressions. While the Chasers don't speak, it's still great fun to test your general knowledge against Mark Labbett, Shaun Wallace, Anne Hegerty, Paul Sinha, Jenny Ryan, and Darragh Ennis. Of course, the game wouldn't be complete without a host, Bradley Walsh who also lends his voice to guide you along. It's a nice touch as it gives a slither of immersion to an otherwise flat game.

Controls are fairly responsive, with questions being answered by flicking the analogue stick in the desired direction. My only issue with the game is that real money doesn't fly out of the Switch when you beat the Chaser!

All in all, fans of the television show will eat up everything that Barnstorm has brought to this video game version. It's a bright colourful title, that's bursting with the high-tempo music and glitz of the show. The Chase Ultimate Edition is the perfect time waster for any long journey, as well as a perfect party title. It's easy enough for younger players to get involved, but it's also got enough variations in questions to give every wannabe Chaser a challenge!

Rating: 10/10
