Video Game Review - Barotrauma

Image
What lurks in the deep? Being in early access for the past four years has been kind to submarine survival game, Barotrauma. Not only have the development teams over at FakeFish and Undertow Games managed to refine their title, they’ve also gained a loyal and dedicated fan base along the way. This fan base has also worked in favour of making Barotrauma  the title that it is today. Across a multitude of error reporting, suggestions, and other feedback, the developers have listened to their players needs and adjusted things accordingly. So, to say that Barotruma owes a lot to its fans rings quite true.   With Barotrauma now leaving its early access harbour, it’s time for me to venture into those alien seas. But, do I sink or swim?  Considering that the game bills itself as a raw survival experience, there is quite a narrative arc churning away in the background. Set in the future, Barotrauma tells the story of humanity’s colonisation efforts within our local solar syst...

Video Game Review - Death or Treat

Image
Spooky, Scary, Skeletons… Longtime followers of Geek Culture Reviews will know that I’m an avid fan of the roguelike genre. While I don’t claim to be any good, their simple pick up and play style allows for a more casual style of gaming away from the competitive world of ranked Overwatch 2 and Halo Infinite. When I received the email to potentially review Death or Treat - the debut title from developers Saona Studios - I jumped at the opportunity.  Now, would I become the HollowTown hero? We’ll come with me as we find out!  The main narrative of Death or Treat centres around a war for a substance known as “Candy”. You play as a friendly (but badass) ghost called Scary, who’s drafted by HollowTown’s remaining citizens to battle the evil Faceboo conglomerate from taking control of Candy and destroying the town. What follows is some less subtle jibes at social media, big corporations, and Mark Zuckerberg, as Scary battles back against “The Man” aka ‘Fackerburg’. While Death or T...

Video Game Review - Everspace 2

Image
Where roguelites dare to tread… Everspace 2 is an action-RPG that’s been kitbashed together with an arcade space shooter. With an eerie vibe that got me reminiscing about famed PS1 shooter Colony Wars, on the surface  Everspace 2 promised to scratch my “Top Gun in space” itch.  If like me you’ve entered Everspace 2 from previously playing Everspace you’ll be a little surprised. While the original game offered a pretty decent roguelite of venturing across a procedurally generated galaxy, this sequel dispenses it for a more structured adventure. In going with a story-driven approach, developers Rockfish Games have improved on the original in every way. Not only is the galaxy bigger, and bolder, the narrative adds deeper meaning to Adam’s plight that was ploy touched upon in Everspace.  This space opera begins with playable protagonist Adam, performing a simple babysitting job for a group of corporate prospectors. As a hot-shot pilot, it’s Adam’s job to keep the civilian shi...
