Comic Book Review - The Best of 2000 AD Vol.2

Image
Rob reviews The Best of 2000 AD Vol. 2... It's been a few months since Rebellion 's first attempt at luring new readers to the phenomenon that is 2000 AD. The Best of 2000 AD Vol.1 offered an accessible mix tape of thrills that had been made up from a small snippet of the long-running comic book defining stories.  Much like its predecessor,  The Best of 2000 AD Vol. 2 boasts yet another trip across Tharg's Thrillverse for those looking to test the waters. For the uninitiated, series editor Owen Johnson has curated a veritable mix of tales that showcases 2000 AD without needing vast amounts of knowledge to understand. However, for veteran readers, The Best of 2000 AD Vol. 2 offers a brilliant way to reacquaint with old favorites, while allowing for plenty of potential passing of the torch discussions. Taking on the style of an oversized version of the weekly Prog, The Best of 2000 AD Vol. 2 features six strips pulled from the publications past and present. Once...

Comic Book Review - Dark Souls: The Complete Collection

Image
Rob reviews Dark Souls: The Complete Collection... The world of the Dark Souls video game series is one of wonder. Underneath its undead and demonic exteria, there's a fascinating world connected with a vast degree of lore and intrigue. While Dark Souls 1, 2, and 3 touched upon their lore it wasn't necessarily explained openly to you. As such players had to discover the story for themselves. Whether it be through the game's many quests, character interactions, and item descriptions. With a vast overarching narrative, it's obvious that this world could be further expanded into other media - such as comics.  Dark Souls: The Complete Collection gathers four previously separate Dark Souls-inspired tales together into one volume. Produced by Titan Comics this volume collects the stories ' The Breath of Andolu s ', ' Winter's Spite ', ' Age of Fire ', and finally ' Legends of the Flame '. While these tales don't necessarily ...

Indie Spotlight - London Gothic Chapter 1

Image
Rob reviews London Gothic Chapter 1... London Gothic is the debut graphic novel from writer  Nick Henry . Across this opening issue, Henry takes us on a supernatural journey across a London landscape that's very different from our own.  On the surface, the story of London Gothic is pretty straightforward. Over the centuries two rival factions have been battling a secret war. On one side is the Brotherhood of Sinistre and its leader Lord Finnius Cromwell. With world domination being the Sinistre's main goal, they'll need to obtain certain relics to unleash demon-kind onto the unsuspecting populous. Standing in their way is The Tuttori. As humanity's shield against this evil, the Tuttori have protected the world since the times of Christ. Now, their last known member; The Duke - with the aid of his faithful companion Jellico - is all that stands in the way of Finnius Cromwell and his goons.  As stories go, London Gothic is a pretty decent debut. Not content wi...

Graphic Novel Review - Little Monarchs

Image
Rob reviews Little Monarchs by Jonathan Case... Little Monarchs is an all-ages sci-fi tale about a post-apocalyptic world that's saviour rests on the wings of the Monarch Butterfly. What follows is a cross country tale as 10-year old Elvie and her caretaker Flora follow the migratory trail of the Monarch, whilst contending with other situations in this apocalyptic environment.  When Holiday House approached me I'm regards to reviewing Jonathan Case 's graphic novel I was a little apprehensive. While I have covered all-ages books in the past, I wasn't sure if this would be a graphic novel I could relate to. However from reading the press release and seeing how much research Case put into creating Little Monarchs,  reading the novel made me appreciate the experience a lot more.  Developed with help from conservationists at the Xerces Society , Monarch Joint Venture , and Monarch Watch , Case has added a depth of scientific accuracy to the narrati...
