Review: Magik #1

Image
‘Magik #1’ takes a walk on the supernatural side as Illyana Rasputin sets off on her post-Krakoa adventure… Since the fall of the mutant island Krakoa it seems that Marvel Comics is going all out on giving us a new X-Men-related series each week. This week also seems to follow the trend as Magik #1 heads to comic book shelves. Normally I’m not that into reading about mutant kind, however since the launch of “From the Ashes” I have been drawn to the various series that fall under the umbrella narrative. Naturally, it was given that I’d dive straight into Magik #1.  This issue opens up in a small town in Alaska where the citizens are seemingly being dragged away into oblivion by a demonic force. This suburban horror is then cut to Magik as the mutant is suffering from a nightmare. While a simple scene in itself it does do a good job in briefing new readers on who Magik is while not bogging the issue down with needless exposition. Anyway, once this is over the rest of the X-Men attemp...

Kickstarter Spotlight: Wallop! Annual

Image
Rob Lake takes a look at the Wallop! Annual Kickstarter... These last few months I've recently found myself turning towards Kickstarter to find new comics to read. I've always been a fan of the juggernaut that is Marvel , but since the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) turned up and oversaturated everything, I decided to explore the often neglected indie scene of comics.  By doing so I've come across a few incredible independent comic publishers - and made a few friends along the way. My latest finding was Wallop! Annual , which was all due to being tagged in a tweet by Sentinal artist Ed Doyle . Upon checking out the Wallop! campaign page on Kickstarter I was instantly impressed by what creators  John Jackson and Brian Clarke  have put together.  The Wallop! Annual intends to be a homage to the Beano and Dandy that's been kicked into the 21st century. The annual will feature 68-pages of fun and laughter all within a hardback cover. ...

Under his tenure as Tharg, MacManus oversaw the creations of many characters and stories for 2000AD that many of us still talk about to this day. To a lot of us Steve MacManus is a legend, and quite rightly so! Thankfully MacManus is back and this time the veteran Editor has teamed up with The77's Ben Cullis to launch their vision of - Blazer!  So what exactly is Blazer! ? Well anyone who's read MacManus ' fictional tale -   The Sheerglam Conspiracy ...

Comic Book Review - Judge Dredd Megazine: Issue 428

Image
Rob Lake reviews Judge Dredd Megazine Issue #428... The first Megazine of 2021 is here. It's all systems continue for everything apart from Dredd this month. Megatropolis continues its alt-history take on the Dreddverse, More of the Judges early years are explored in Drednoughts, The Returners continue whatever it is they're doing, Death lives in Deliverance, and kicking things off this month is Dredd hunting a new serial killer in The Night Flyer.  It's been a good few months so far with the Megazine so let's dive in and see if that trend continues with Issue #428... Judge Dredd: The Night Flyer  Dredd kicks things off this month with a superb done-in-one that's been written by Kenneth Niemand . I felt that The Night Flyer could have done with another part, what we have is still just as good.  A mysterious Peter Pan type killer dubbed the Night Flyer has been kidnapping Meg citizens at random. The Justice Department so far has no leads as we join the...

Comic Book Preview - Mighty Morphin #4

Image
Comic Book preview: Mighty Morphin Issue #4... With the Unlimited Power era of the Power Rangers now in full swing. One mystery still remains...who is the Green Ranger? In issue #3 of Mighty Morphin we do get the reveal that Grace Sterling is pulling the strings, but who's inside the suit is still left ambiguous. Whilst I've got my suspicions on it being Matt, it could in reality be anyone connected to the Rangers.  Thankfully series writer Ryan Parrott has teased over on Twitter that the reveal could take place in the upcoming Mighty Morphin issue #4. The seasoned writer posted the below tweet, which of course garnered a flourish of attention. https://twitter.com/ThatRyanParrott/status/1351260574412206080?s=19 Whilst the writer doesn't give anything away, fans of Mighty Morphin are eagerly awaiting the launch of issue #4 on February 10th.  Rob Lake - For more comic book chat why not follow Geek Culture Reviews on Twitter @GeekCultureRev

Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Regened: Vol 1.

Image
Rob Lake reviews 2000 AD Regened: Vol 1... Whether you like them or not, the special 2000 AD Regened - All Ages Progs seem to be here to stay. And now for the first time all of the past Regened stories have been collected into a single graphic novel.  The 2000 AD Regened: Vol 1. collects a selection of the Regened stories from the last couple of years. Featuring the likes of Cadet Dredd, Strontium Dog, Rogue Trooper and many more. These characters from the normal - more adult Progs have been "adapted" into stories that are suitable for all-ages.  It's a nice idea to create these special all-ages strips as they're primarily aimed at the younger audience who are potentially stepping up from the Beano or Dandy . Of course back in my day - I'm 35 so still technically young - we had 2000 AD as our comic. If anything it goes to show how attitudes have changed over the years. Whilst I grew up with the likes of Necropolis , Judgement on Gotham and the (in)fa...

Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Prog 2214

Image
Rob Lake reviews 2000 AD Prog 2214... We're back with the second Prog of 2021. With Lockdown 3 - Johnson Strikes Back, appearing across the UK, a few of us are turning to comics as a medium to escape.  The juggernaut that is 2000 AD continues to provide a weekly Jarjaz of thrills. The long-established weekly comic also continues to pull its weight in showing why it was voted in the top spot in ComicScene's recent Top 10 comics of 2020 list. In regards to this weeks Prog, it's all systems continue, Dredd is still down South in Desperadlands , Hershey kicks arse in The Brutal, Slaine is still slaying his way through Troy in Dragontamer , Proteus Vex continues to get weird in Shadow Chancellor , and finally, Red goes to war in Durham Red . Judge Dredd: Desperadlands - Part 2 Micheal Caroll and Will Simpson continue their journey into Ciudad Barranquilla. It's an absolute joy seeing Simpson back in the Progs.  We're on the outskirts of Ciudad Barranquilla...
