Comic Book Review - BRZRKR #9

Image
Rob reviews BRZRKR #9... Boom! Studios, Keanu Reeves , and Matt Kindt 's brutal tale of the immortal B is heading to its conclusion. Throughout the last nine issues, we've seen B recount his personal history as his current "masters" attempt to unlock the secrets to his creation. It's been a rip-roaring ride of blood and non-stop action, that feels like it's sacrificed any semblance of coherent plot. However, with the final arc now starting, could we see a more human side to the monster?  I'm not going to lie, I came into BRZRKR #9 with a bit of curious anticipation. For the vast majority of issues (for me), the narrative has been more miss than hit. While the action sequences are pretty good the narrative feels like it's on repeat. Yet reading the synopsis to this ninth issue makes out that everything has been leading up to this point, however in reality it's just more of the same. After his disappearance underneath the Moj...

Comic Book Review BRZRKR #6

Image
Rob reviews BRZRKR #6... Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt 's BRZRKR has surprisingly been a bit of a slow burn. Over the last 5-issues, we've delved into the Unute's quite brutal and bloody past, whilst only getting glimpses of his present.  With BRZRKR #6 this dynamic changes as we're now fully into the present day.  Set during a black ops mission in Ukraine, this issue follows Unute and his handler as they traverse the wilderness to their secondary extraction point. Along the way, we see more of the Unute's past, as we finally learn about what drives him, and his desire for a sense of normality. And yes...that brutal action is also here too! The overall story of this issue is your regular military affair. The "good guys" are after something and are using a current rebellion to sneak in and get it. Problem is that on the way out their chopper gets shot down, leaving only Unute and his handler Jim as the only survivors. Now tasked with reaching a ...

Comic Book Review - BRZRKR #5

Image
Rob reviews BRZRKR #5... It has been a few weeks since we last caught up with Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt's BRZRKR . The series so far has delved into the undying B's past, whilst not clarifying his future. Yet regardless of this shortfall, the series has been quite a success for both publishers - BOOM! Studios - and the creative team.  BRZRKR #5 is the opening to the series' second story arc. Once again B is re-living his past under the watchful eye of Doctor Diana Ahuja. Throughout the introductory arc, it felt like the doctor was B's only friend, but here I'm not so sure. So this time the duo are analyzing the more human side to B's past as the immortal recounts his many loves - and his eventual losses. It's quite a poignant tale as B recounts who he is, his reality, and what he ultimately wants from life.  Throughout we've caught a glimpse of an existential crisis from the character and here their finally explored in the op...

Comic Book Review - BRZRKR #4

Image
Rob reviews BRZRKR #4... After weeks of asking, we're finally getting that human side to B. Much like what's been seen in previous issues there's still a vast amount of ridiculous action. But the human element of the character is now starting to come through. And my crazy prediction at the end of the last review is inching ever closer to reality. BRZRKR #4 continues the trend of delving into B's past. This time round we re-live quite a poignant part of this history. The first time B "died".  It's an interesting set-up, B and his father (no not the God, the other one) head out to attack another tribe. However in doing so the rest of the enemy tribe arrive at their unprotected settlement. As such they proceed to slaughter those left there - including B's mother. News of the deception then reaches B's father as the young immortal suddenly realises that home is at threat. Racing back we then get that BRZRKR classic of B tearing...

Comic Book Review - BRZRKR #3

Image
Rob reviews BRZRKR #3... So far in the short life of BOOM! Studios' BRZRKR series we've seen the Immortal B murder his way through the present day - and the not so present day. With issue #3 you'd think that Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt's tale would start to "mellow". However, we get treated to yet more bloodshed.  This may sound overly harsh. Whilst the action is pretty good, it's the effect on telling this story is starting to wear thin. We do get to see some small bits of B's personality as he starts to question his life's purpose, but it's so minuscule that it doesn't offer anything new. Anyway, moving on...most of BRZRKR #3 is told from the past perspective as we see B and his tribe slaughtering their way through their rivals. B starts to question his existence as his fellow tribesmen call him "Unute" - a dog of war. There's more gratuitous violence as B's Father uses his to decimate the various tribes. Eve...
