Comic Book Review - Eve #5

Rob reviews Eve #5... This week sees Eve's journey reach its end, and what a ride it's been. Throughout Victor LaValle 's series, we've seen Eve go from computer simulation to the planets saviour. There's been plenty of trials and tribulations along the way - with a few twists and turns too. So as we bid adieu to Eve and her world, does it end with a bang or a whimper?  The main theme running throughout Eve is how mankind treats its home. It's quite a hot topic at the moment with global warming being at the forefront of a lot of media coverage. Naturally, Eve's world has a somewhat sci-fi take on the subject, but the reality is that if we continue to exploit our planet, our reality could be much worse. LaValle had certainly brought the topic over well and Eve's story does certainly raise quite a few what-if questions.  One thing I've praised all along this story is how LaVelle has built his world and fully realised each character within....

Comic Book Review - Eve #4

Rob reviews Eve #4... After the revelations of the last issue , Eve #4 deals with the fallout. Last time out we found out that Wexler isn't technically working with Eve's best interests at heart. He effortlessly slaughtered a group of child survivors to then have Eve within his sights. As the killer robot teddy bear finally caught up with Eve, he was then seemingly destroyed by a mysterious figure. This person turned out to be an older version of Eve... Eve #4 picks off straight after this shocking revelation. As the "sisters" get to know each other we learn through the older Eve that they are in fact clones and that the current Eve is the last in the line. The clones sole purpose is to locate a vault that's got the technology inside that's needed to re-seed planet Earth. If Eve fails then the world will die. One small problem is that the Vault is now located at the bottom of the ocean - something the current Eve has been trained for.  Victor LaV...

Rob reviews Eve #3... Victor LaValle take a bow! What an issue! Everything we've come to know about Eve and the world she finds herself in has been drastically changed. I'm not talking about subtle changes, I mean the whole dynamic of what's going on - and who to trust.  I'm going to try and avoid spoilers as the events shown in this issue are best experienced first-hand. However, there may be some slight spoiler territory moments.  Anyway, So far we've followed Eve as she awoke from her relative safe haven to then be thrust into a decaying world. With her robot companion Wexler at her side, Eve sets off in search of a cure to save both the remnants of humanity - and the Earth - from a rampant airborne virus. Last time out we were introduced to Eve's father who's onboard the space station "Osiris". Along with his fellow scientists, Eve's father is attempting to bring life back to the planet and Eve is instrumental in his plan. Howe...

Comic Book Review - Eve #2

Rob reviews Eve #2... Eve #1 set its tone incredibly well  and got this original story off to a very strong start. We followed the titular character - Eve - as she acclimatised to this strange post-apocalyptic world. While Eve #1  is short on its exposition, Victor LaValle focused on introducing us to Eve and her youthful outlook on life whilst drip-feeding the state of the world around her.  This time around, LaValle throws the world-building onto the table.  Eve #2 opens up in Earth orbit on the space station Osiris. Eve's father and a group of scientists are stationed on Osiris and are running experiments to revive the planets plant life. Meanwhile, on the surface below, Eve and her robot companion Wexler start their journey into the remains of New York City.  It isn't long before Eve stumbles upon this worlds enemy (more below). This gives LaValle a  chance to bring more world-building across to the reader and to show Wexler in action. An...

Comic Book Review - EVE #1

Rob reviews EVE #1... Eve #1 is the latest series coming from the creative powerhouse that's BOOM! Studios'. The world as we know it has all but been obliterated. Societies future rests in the hands of Eve, an adolescent girl who refuses to give up hope inside of this broken world.  This opening brings with it plenty of meaningful messages, important themes, and dire circumstances, that's all wrapped up in a beautiful, yet powerful story.  The story opens up with the titular character navigating some pretty dense treetops. As Eve journeys home we see her optimistic approach to life and her passion for the beauty of the world around her. Once home, we learn of Eve's plans for the future and that she can't stay on this mysterious paradise island forever. As Eve walks through a doorway we then learn that this perfect world is a lie. As Eve wakes up in the "real" world she starts to realise that her life up until this point has been a simulation. ...
