Comic Book Review - Star Wars: The High Republic #1 [Phase 3]

One year after Starlight and the Nihil stand victorious… A lot has changed in the Star Was universe since we last saw the Jedi of Starlight Beacon. Since the Nihil’s attack on the Republics crowning jewel, the terrorist network has taken over the Outer Rim. Not only have they set up an ominous Occlusion Zone that blocks any travel into the Rim, there’s also the Nameless to contend with too. And with the Namelss being the one thing to strip a Jedi of the Force, well things aren’t too good.  Kicking off the third phase of the High Republic, Cavan Scott uses this first issue to reconnect us with Keeve Trennis to then delve deeper into her psyche. Still reeling from the effects of her undercover mission and the failure to save Starlight Beacon, Keeve is a shadow of her former self. She’s haunted by the thoughts of her former masters death at the hands of the Nameless, and even her solitude in the Force forces her to relive Sskeer’s apparent death. The past soon comes back to the presen...

Comic Book Review - Star Wars: The High Republic #15

Rob reviews Star Wars: The High Republic #15... As the world around the core cast continues to crumble there is a glimmer of light at the end. When Cavan Scott kicked off The High Republic last year it was under a banner of optimism. The Jedi are at the height of their power, and the newly constructed Starlight Beacon hangs as the shining light within the Outer Rim.  However, things soon turned sour as the Jedi (and the Republic) came under attack from the insidious Nihil. What started as routine search and rescue of an attacked starship, soon turned into a galaxy-spanning conflict that's pretty much torn the Jedi of Starlight Beacon apart. There's been loss after loss as the Nihil threw all their might at the Jedi. It's this onslaught that's also allowed Cavan Scott to tap into a side of the Star Wars mythos that's rarely explored - horror.  Our main viewpoint through The High Republic has been the Jedi Knight - Keeve Trennis. To say that the young Je...

Comic Book Review - Star Wars: The High Republic #14

Rob reviews Star Wars: The High Republic #14... Since its start, the main High Republic comic has been a real page-turner. From its fledgling opening to the current issue, Cavan Scott has weaved an intricate story that's all bound by one overall question - what it means to be a Jedi.  Through the eyes of the principal cast, we've seen every one of them ask this question in various ways. Whether it is Keeve Trennis - who doubts her abilities, Sskeer - who's losing his connection to the Force, or Avar Kriss - whose path for justice is leading her away from the Light. Now as The High Republic phase #1 enters its twilight, Scott starts to bring these threads together, as well as building towards the next phase. To say the Jedi have had an easy time is a serious understatement. Even catching the deadly Nihil by surprise hasn't been as easy as some may have hoped. While the bulk of the Jedi strike force has dealt a blow to the Nihil organisation, they nearly lo...

Comic Book Review - Star Wars: The High Republic #4

Rob reviews Star Wars: The High Republic #4... I'm thoroughly enjoying The High Republic . Its storytelling doesn't have to rely on any previous lore, and to an extent writer, Cavan Scott is crafting his masterpiece away from the mainstream Star Wars series.  Set way before the dark days of the Republic that lead to the rise of the Galactic Empire. The High Republic focuses on both the Republic and its Jedi Knights who are both at the height of their power. It's not all glamorous as the Jedi are dealing with various foes such as the pirate-like Nihil and the sentient plant - The Drengir. Issue #3 of The High Republic saw the Jedi investigating Sedri Minor after the events onboard the Hutt starship that had been attacked by the Nihil back in issue #2. The Jedi's search then turns into a rescue mission as the inhabitants of the planet inform them of various missing people - including the Jedi Knight, Ceret. The Series protagonist, Jedi Knight Ke...
