Book Review - Apparitions of East Anglia

Rob checks out Apparitions of East Anglia...

Growing up in East Anglia you get to hear some very strange and bizarre tales of ghosts and ghouls and things that go bump in the night. To many East Anglia is a tranquil county filled with vast fields and the winding Norfolk Broads. But just below the surface, the county holds many tales of witchcraft, betrayals, and plenty of otherworldly goings-on. Ask anyone who's grown up in places like Lowestoft (my home town) or Norwich and there will be some kind of folklore horror that's passed down from generation to generation.

Apparitions of East Anglia is a collection of this folklore that aims to celebrate these often strange-yet-true tales. Writer Chris Spalton takes us on a journey that sees the tales of 'The Black Shuck', and 'The Siebert Family' and many others told with a great degree of insight and excitement around them.

Spalton backs these tales up with a great introduction that focuses on this time growing up in The Fens, as well as his own paranormal experiences. It's great to see his passion come through into Apparitions of East Anglia. Spalton writes in a very simple and effective way that conveys these often chilling tales to the reader.

Each tale is short, which is also backed up by some gorgeous artwork - and some stunning photography.
The art is particularly impressive, as you get a sense of the subject that the tale is based upon and Spalton has a somewhat raw art style.

If you're into mythology and folklore then Apparitions of East Anglia is a great read. It's full of weird and wonderful tales that are steeped within the rich history of East Anglia. Chris Spalton acts as a brilliant guide, who's passion and enthusiasm for the project shines from cover to cover.
