Comic Book Review - Heroes Reborn #2

Rob reviews Heroes Reborn #2...

The opening act to Marvel's Heroes Reborn set up an alternative universe that looked to shake-up the established Marvel Universe - And it certainly has done. But in creating this 'Avenger-less' world, Heroes Reborn has created the DCU under the Marvel banner....and it's all gone a bit downhill.

Heroes Reborn #2 focuses on this new worlds most powerful being, Hyperion. Who let's face it is a clone of Superman. Anyway, the opening act sees Galactus' death at the hands of Hyperion. It's a phenomenal piece that plays out over a double-page spread and a splash page. Not only does it showcase how much power Hyperion has, it also highlights the issues take on a somewhat classic Marvel moment - albeit very differently. After this event, the ball starts to roll very quickly down a steep hill.

The idea of a world without the Avengers is one thing. But considering that the Fantastic 4 debuted in 1961, a whole 2-years before the Avengers...where are they within this new world?  To me this is going to be Heroes Reborn's biggest issue - continuity. We've already seen the reinvention of Peter Parker, Doctor Doom etc. Yet all of these characters existed before the Avengers. It doesn't make a tonne of sense and seems that Marvel are playing into a Justice League lead universe that they control. It just feels mediocre.

Dale Keown is on art duties for this second act. Keown is a great artist. His work on The Incredible Hulk is truly fantastic, yet here in Heroes Reborn it's rather lacking which is a shame considering Keown's skill and flair. Yet it gets better... By the issues end we jump back to Ed McGuinness who gives us yet another Captain America tease. No idea why we switch Keown for McGuinness but hey-ho...

Heroes Reborn is another big event that's rapidly becoming mediocre. What could of been used go breath new life into older characters, or to even showcase a new range of superhero has turned into the same old tried and tested formula. We've got Superman, Batman and Jimmy Olsen dressed up as Marvel characters when we could of got something a lot better. My inner Marvel fan isn't willing to give up on this one, yet I'm rapidly loosing interest - and we're only up to issue 2!

Rating 6/10
