Comic Book Review - Way of X #1
Rob reviews Way of X #1...
The last time I read an X-Men comic was during the Avengers Vs. X-Men storyline a few years ago. I've found in the past that X-Men stories often seem a little hard to follow, especially with multiple on-going stories and an entire web of interconnected narratives.
So when Way of X #1 landed on my lap I thought it was time to catch up on Mutant life within the Marvel Universe. Since AVX, life for Mutant kind has changed dramatically, and from what i can understand is in a much better place from where it has been during recent time.
Way of X #1 focuses on Nightcrawler as he attempts to move on with the times. See, Mutant culture has evolved. Not only are the dark days (kind-of) in the past, but Mutants have developed resurrection technology too!
There's a few action scenes as Nightcrawler and his team contend with the Orchis. But the real bulk of this opening is the simmering tensions that are under Krakoa's seemingly perfect life. Magneto, Professor X, and Doctor Nemesis all feature with each offering vastly different perspectives on life. If anything it's an interesting case study on how life would "evolve" within the face of immortality.
Si Spurrier does a brilliant job in highlighting these moral questions within a character driven story. Every piece of dialogue flows at a wonderful pace, and feels very natural. Considering I'm not up to date on Mutant affairs, Way of X read incredibly well. I felt that not only am I up to speed, but I now have a new found interest in whats happened since AVX.
Bob Quinn's illustrations are full of detail and some incredible soft line work. Each character oozes emotion as Quinn and Spurrier develop this complex world through them. Nightcrawler is the perfect character to focus these sort of moral quandary story on as the character has a rich emotional history - which is brilliantly played on here.
Way of X #1 is the start of something interesting. It's a great insight into both Mutant faith and Krakoa. I've got so many questions that need answers and I can't wait to see what the future brings.
Rating 8/10
