Comic Book Review - Geiger #1
Rob reviews Geiger #1...
Geiger is the follow-up (sort-of) to DC's Doomsday Clock. Created by Doomsday Clock duo Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, Geiger is as far away from Doctor Manhattan, the DC Universe as you can get. But in a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland, the world is arguably more dangerous.
Geiger opens to a world on the brink of nuclear armageddon. As tensions boil over we see ab unassuming family retreat to a fallout shelter in Nevada. Fast-forward a few years and the world's all gone Mad Max. We follow a stranger who's garnered many nicknames from the denizens of this new world. We soon find out that the 'Meltdown Man' is none other than Tariq Geiger, a man who has the power to save this world, or destroy it.
Considering that Johns isn't working with pre-established characters, Geiger is all of his own work and his blank canvas to craft.
With this in mind, straight from the get-go, Johns gives us an emotional kick as we see Tariq Geiger's life before the bombs hit. The trials and sacrifices to get his family into the shelter is a great character introduction to the very different character we see again a few years later. Geiger is an interesting character who gives off the vibes of characters such as, Mad Max but he almost has a superhero-esq quality to him just bubbling under the surface. It's interesting and I cant wait to see how the character develops as the series moves forward.
Gary Frank and long time collaborator Brad Anderson bring a great look to the end of the world, with fantastic use of some clean and uncluttered cells. Again, this is quite the departure from the duo's usual superhero work, yet it's something special. The art flows from page to page and coupled with Anderson's colours it's an incredibly inviting word. There's a lot of beauty within this world, even if there isn't much of it left.
With plenty of hints as to what's on the horizon. The team behind Geiger are definitely onto something special. Fans of post-apocalyptic worlds such as those seen in Mad Max and even Fallout, and to an extent, The Walking Dead will get a kick out of Geiger. It's a showcase of what Johns, Frank, Anderson, and Rob Leigh can do and is a far cry from the "safety" of Doomsday Clock.
Rating 8/10
