Comic Book Review: Judge Dredd Megazine #430

Rob Lake reviews Judge Dredd Megazine #430...

The latest Megazine is hitting shops this week and it's full to the brim of non-stop action. We get another done-in-one Dredd, More Megatropolis delights, Dark Judges in Deliverance, a new outing for Deviln Waugh and the end to the latest Returners arc.

As comic book readers will know, Si Spencer sadly passed away back in February. Spencer is well known for his work as a comic writer and a television script-editor and he will be deeply missed by many. There is also a memorial GoFundMe page set up in Si's honor. If you wish too donate to the fund you can do so here

Judge Dredd: One for the Ages

Rory McConville and Karl Richardson dive into the competition culture of Mega-City 1.
This time it all revolves around competitive aging as someone's bumping off their fellow elders all in the sake of being the oldest cit.

McConville gives us an excellent done-in-one thats got plenty of comedic and tongue-in cheek moments. It's all backed up with some great Karl Richardson artwork that gives off that solid sci-fi look.

Megatropolis - Part 7

Ken Niemand's alt-history tale has gone from strength to strength. With plenty of revelations - and more still to come, Niemand is on to something incredible with the Megatropolis world. This week he turns our attention to yet another classic Dreddverse character - Cassandra Anderson.

Oh boy! What a doozy introducing Anderson is, and it's one that comes with a very dark warning...

It's been fantastic seeing all these familiar faces within a totally new setting. Megatropolis has been a series that both constantly delivers on its story, to then throw you something different. And yes, Dave Taylor's art is just incredible!

Devlin Waugh: A Question of Trust - Part 1

Devlin Waugh and his demonic dildo friend, Titty are back.

Alex Kot and Mike Downling give us that classic Waugh tale of high class dining, plenty of intrigue, with very dark undertones.
This opening is quite a sombre affair as Devlin and Titty sip wine and enjoy some candid chat about Hell and even some more backstory to Titty and how a demonic dildo lives it's life.

Mike Downling gives us an art masterclass as he uses this quiet moment to really stir the pot. There's some great facial expressions on show as Devlin studies his cohorts.

The Returners: Heartswood - Part 7

It's the end of the second Returners arc as Heartswood comes to an end.

While it's been a bit of a confusing run, it's all tied up nicely as the Returners reunite the two lost souls. It ends on a high note that sets up the next outing - Amazonia, which is set to start in a few months time.

This is of course all overshadowed by the untimely passing of Si Spencer. I hope once the Returners series is complete that we see a complete edition as a lasting tribute to Si's creation.

The Dark Judges: Deliverance - Part 7

Closing this months Megazine is another trip to David Hine's Dark Judges. Deliverance has given us a new look to the Dark Judges, one that's been missing for a few stories and that's horror. While Kek-W's Fall of Deadworld started to bring the scary element back, Deliverance has delivered it to us. Although the comedy moments are still here, Hine pushes them to the background as he focuses on what the Dark Judges do best.

This horror is all backed up by some incredible art by Nick Percival. Percival's art oozes with evil intents when it comes to the Dark Judges. Each of their insidious traits are brought to the surface as Percival shows that he's the right guy for the job.

With a newer alien look to Mortis, Fire and Fear, the Dark Judges are truly something to be afraid of once more.

Rating 9/10
