Comic Book Review - A Thing Called Truth #2

Rob reviews 'A Thing Called Truth #2'... Lolanda Zanfardino and Elisa Romboli' s A Thing Called Truth set off to a tremendous start. The opening issue did a superb job in introducing 'Dr Traumer', to then lead us through a drunken night that ended with her car being stolen - with herself on the backseat! Now as she struggles to comprehend what exactly has just happened, and why her (former) employers have locked her out of her life's work, we're over to Dorian Wildfang - accidental hostage-taker - and the complete opposite to Dr Mags. Much like our introduction to Mags, Lolanda Zanfardino dives straight into Dorian's life from a few days before their eventual meeting. And again, much like Mags, Dorian is an instantly loveable character. The opening pages introduce us to a confident young woman, who shares a kindred spirit with her brother Faust. There's a lot to read between the lines as we learn that the duo is caring for their sick mo

Video Game Review - Metroid Dread

Rob reviews Metroid Dread on Nintendo Switch... MercurySteam is no stranger when it comes to intergalactic bounty hunter - Samus Arran. Back in 2017, the development team gave us the sublime 3DS Metroid II remake - Metroid: Samus Returns , and after nailing that adventure, Nintendo have given the team another shot of that Metroid glory. This time around things take a more "original" approach as we catch up with Samus at the end of the journey that she started on back in 1986. There's a lot of that traditional gameplay here, with a few new (and risky) surprises. But does Metroid Dread retain the charm that originally made the series so well-loved?  Before we begin diving into the nitty-gritty, Metroid Dread is a gorgeous looking game. Considering that the game was also released at the same time as the OLED Switch, then it probably comes as no surprise. While I can't personally vouch for how the game looks on the new OLED screen - it looks great on a &quo

Re:Play - Episode 1 - Kunai

Geek Culture Reviews Re:Play - Episode #1: Kunai For this episode of Re:Play I decided to revisit Kunai - a Metroidvania, action-shooter, that's developed by TurtleBlaze ... Kunai ‘s story is a simple one. Humanity stands on the brink of collapse due to its machine creations becoming self-aware and has decided that Humanity is the main threat to its existence (que the Terminator theme). The survivors of this apocalypse have begun to fight back and a few of the sentient machines have joined their aid. One such machine called “Tabby”, an emote-wearing-ninja-tablet is that stands in the way of the machines total victory.  Yes, Kunai is The Terminator ,  Metroid , Castlevania and a Smart Phone, all thrown into a blender. The protagonist of this world is Tabby who is a tablet computer that knows ninjitsu and it is it’s a quest to stop the A.I. uprising and save what’s left of Humanity. Kunai 's world is made up of different regions that feature many CRT-headed enemie

Comic Book Review - Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious - Defender Of The Daleks #1

*Disclaimer*  The following review was originally written by myself for publishing on Flickering Myth. However, due to reasons that I won't go into, my time contributing to the site was terminated. As such my writer's page was taken down and my credits were scrubbed from the site. The following review is from a draft that I found on my OneDrive and  is being posted to the blog for prosperity. Also some of it is now a little out of date. Anyway, enjoy! Rob Lake reviews Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious – Defender of the Daleks #1...  With Jodie Whittiker 's Doctor being off our screens for the next year or so, what do you do to keep the ‘Whovians' interested in the meantime? That answer is Time Lord Victorious . A multi-platform story spanning various media from comic strips, audiobooks and live-action experiences. As well as tie-in merchandise. The story is set to feature three Doctors – Paul McGaan ’s 8th incarnation, Christopher Eccleston 's 9th incarna

Comic Book Review BRZRKR #6

Rob reviews BRZRKR #6... Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt 's BRZRKR has surprisingly been a bit of a slow burn. Over the last 5-issues, we've delved into the Unute's quite brutal and bloody past, whilst only getting glimpses of his present.  With BRZRKR #6 this dynamic changes as we're now fully into the present day.  Set during a black ops mission in Ukraine, this issue follows Unute and his handler as they traverse the wilderness to their secondary extraction point. Along the way, we see more of the Unute's past, as we finally learn about what drives him, and his desire for a sense of normality. And yes...that brutal action is also here too! The overall story of this issue is your regular military affair. The "good guys" are after something and are using a current rebellion to sneak in and get it. Problem is that on the way out their chopper gets shot down, leaving only Unute and his handler Jim as the only survivors. Now tasked with reaching a

Comic Book Review - Basilisk #5

Rob reviews Basilisk #5... Along with both Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers , Basilisk is the other BOOM! Studios comic that I eagerly await for the preview to drop into my inbox. Cullen Bunn 's ultra-violent thriller does an excellent job of leaving the reader wanting more. Straight from issue #1, we've seen the brutality of the Chimera, yet we still don't quite know exactly who - or what - they are. While some (and I use the term loosely) questions have been answered, such as Hannah's connection to the events and her need for revenge/closure. Others remain unanswered... Back in issue #4  Basilisk wrapped up its first story arc. We got a pulse-pounding battle that not only highlighted the viciousness of both the Chimera - but also Hannah. With the ensuing battle resulting in a loss for the Chimera, we're now in the in-between. Before his demise, Manny reached out to Regan to divulge just what the Chimera's purpose is. Whilst this is still unknow

Video Game Review - The Gunk

Rob reviews The Gunk on Xbox Series X... The Gunk   is one of those titles that I neither love nor hate. It's not a particularly bad game, and what it does, it does very well. However, it's just not memorable. There's no clashing armies or galactic spanning war. It's just two friends attempting to save a planet from a strange parasitic substance called "Gunk". As the name sort of suggests,  The Gunk takes place out within the far reaches of space. The narrative revolves around two galaxy roaming friends - Rani and Becks - as they follow a strange signal on the gamble of securing a large payday to finally pay off their debts. Heading off into uncharted territory, the signal soon leads the duo to an unexplored world, and this is where the game begins.  Landing on this world you're placed into the role of Rani as she sets off to try and discover the secret that she's chasing. Armed with her bionic arm "Pumpkin", Rani will not only di

Video Game Review - White Shadows

Rob reviews White Shadows on Xbox Series X... White Shadows   is a game that's not to be taken lightly. From its opening, you're told what to expect and what themes drive its narrative. The world of White Shadows is far from idyllic, and if anything is a worrying look into what can be considered as societies own troubles.  Welcome to The White City, a monochrome world where society is seen as equal. This is far from the truth as this dystopian world is split across three castes - Wolves, Pigs, and Birds. The Wolves run the show and are seen as the social elite. The Pigs are the everyday workers. They're the "consumers" who believe everything the Wolves say without exception. Then there are the Birds. The birds are ostracised from this society due to the general beliefs (set by the Wolves) that they have brought about "the darkness" which is plaguing the world. Often referred to as "plague birds" members of this caste are killed with

Comic Book Review - 2000 AD Prog 2262

Rob reviews 2000 AD Prog 2262... Yes! It's that time of the week again where I dive into this week's offering of "Thrill-Power" from the powerhouse that is 2000 AD.  If you didn't already know - Christmas is just around the corner. As such Tharg has pulled out a special 100-page Prog to keep those Winter blues away. So strap yourself in, grab your - now mandatory - COVID-19 pass, and lets head straight in!  Judge Dredd: Trinity Courtesy of IGN the basic storyline of this special one-off Dredd had already been revealed. It's a bit of a family reunion as Ken Niemand brings both Karl Urban and Sylvester Stallone to MegaCity-1. This ones got all the hallmarks of a strange Judge Dredd tale - but it's also bloody good!  Technology mogal Leon Fusk has been messing about with interdimentional technology - despite the Justice Department banning the research into it. Dredd gets sent to shut it all down, and then things get strange.  Much like a certai
